Fast Start Propels Baseball Past MIT for Eighth Straight Win, 10-3

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Seniors Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and classmate Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to help Babson College defeat visiting MIT, 10-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With its eighth straight win, Babson improves to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play. MIT has dropped its last five games to slip to 8-10 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.

Santos led all players with three stolen bases, juniors Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) and Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) each singled and drove in a pair of runs, while senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI single, a walk and a run scored for the Beavers. Sophomore James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) improved to 2-1 on the year with the win after giving up three runs on four hits to go along with four strikeouts over 7.0 innings.

Senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) homered, classmate Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) was 1-for-3 with two RBI and fellow senior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) singled twice and added a stolen base for the Engineers. Junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) was unable to get out of the second inning after giving up four earned runs on six hits and dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

The Green and White went to work early scoring five times in the bottom of the first, including four runs with two outs. Guest walked to force in Santos with the first run and Sadowsky's two-out, bases-loaded single to left field two batters later was misplayed allowing all three runs to score to make it 4-0. Senior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Mass.) got drilled in the helmet to keep the inning going and Julian followed with an RBI single to right that brought home Sadowsky for a 5-0 advantage.

Santos led off the second with a single and later scored on a passed ball to extend the Beavers' lead to 6-0. Gumbs scored on an RBI ground out by Godfrey to make it 6-1 in the top of the third but Babson answered back in the bottom half of the frame as Kiely led off with a single and moved to second on Julian's sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI single to center by first-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.).

Finch hit his eighth homer of the season to lead off the top of the fifth and Godfrey made it 7-3 with a one-out RBI single before Clark escaped further damage with a pair of fly outs to get out of the inning. He worked around a two-out walk in the sixth and then retired the side in order in the seventh before turning the ball over to the bullpen.

Graduate student Zach Magee (Indianapolis, Ind.) worked a perfect top of the eighth, the Beavers took advantage of two walks, a hit batsman, two wild pitches and an RBI single by Guest to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the frame, and sophomore Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) recorded a pair of strikeouts to finish things off in the ninth.

Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m., while MIT takes on Salem State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. .
