Baseball Wins NEWMAC Opener at MIT, 14-8

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with two RBI and graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) homered twice and knocked in four runs to help visiting Babson College defeat MIT, 14-8, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at O'Brien Field.

Babson, which has won its last three games, improves to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in league play. MIT has dropped two straight games to fall to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three stolen bases, while classmate Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) and first-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Beavers' 16-hit attack. Sophomore Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) singled and scored twice and senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) singled and knocked in a run in the victory.

Graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, while senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.), graduate Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and first-year Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) all finished with two hits apiece for the Engineers.

Babson sophomore James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) used an inning-ending double play to get out of the first down just 1-0 and the visitors took the lead for good on Tanner's two-run homer to right center with two outs in the top of the third. Kiely made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the fourth and Wilson singled and scored as part of a two-run fifth that extended the lead to 5-1.

Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Engineers back within 5-4 before the Beavers answered back with three runs in the top of the sixth. Wilson plated Sadowsky with a single to left, Santos brought home Kiely with a knock to right and Wilson raced home on a double steal to make it 8-4.

Kiely knocked in Guest and scored on Santos' double as part of a three-run seventh and Guest plated two more runs to give the Green and White its largest lead of the afternoon at 13-5 in the top of the eighth. MIT got a three-run homer from junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) in the bottom of the frame but Tanner followed with his second home of the day, a solo shot to left center, with one out in the ninth for the final margin.

Clark earned a no-decision for the Beavers after giving up three runs over 4.2 innings of work, while first-year Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) improved to 2-1 with the win. He struck out five while allowing five runs in 3.0 innings of relief.

Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) shouldered the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year for the Engineers after giving up five runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings of work.

Babson returns home to face Suffolk on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., while MIT travels to eight-ranked Salve Regina for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
