Softball Splits Two Extra-Inning Games in Florida, Defeating Gettysburg After Falling to Plymouth State

CLERMONT, Fla.—Senior Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) struck out 18 batters in 10 innings and first-year Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) raced home from third with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th as the Babson College softball team defeated Gettysburg College, 3-2, in the second of two extra-inning affairs at The Spring Games on Monday.

The first game went eight innings as Plymouth State edged Babson, 5-4, after the Beavers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra frames.

With the split, Babson is now 2-4 on the Florida trip and 3-8 overall, while Plymouth State is 3-3 and Gettysburg is 5-1.

Game 1 -- Plymouth State 5, Babson 4 (8 innings)

Junior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) went 4-for-4 with an RBI, graduate student Kate Karamouzis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and senior Molly Hennessy (Tallahassee, Fla.) hit doubles, and grad student Cassidy Musco (Walpole, Mass.) and first-year Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) each drove in a run for the Beavers. O'Reilly came on in relief in the seventh inning and fanned four of the first five hitters she faced but suffered the loss on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.

Sophomore Kenzie Bessette (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Abbey Nezuch (Marlborough, Mass.) had two hits apiece for PSU, and Nezuch and junior Jade Guertin (Oakland, R.I.) each produced a double and an RBI. Junior Kate McGrath (Boston, Mass.) went the distance in the circle and earned the win, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and striking out four.

Plymouth State took an early lead with single runs in the first two innings, as Nezuch drilled an RBI double to center in the first and sophomore Emily Bessette (Cranston, R.I.) came home on an infield error in the second.

Babson tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of third. Hennessy led off with a double and Moore singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Hennessy scored on Musco's ground out and Moore came home on Walsh's single to right center. The Panthers regained the lead in the bottom on the third on an RBI double by Guertin and went ahead 4-2 in the last of the fifth following a Babson infield error.

The Beavers forced extra innings with two runs in the seventh inning. Raymond singled to lead off and then came all the way around to score when junior Athena Hadjipanayis' (Rye, N.Y.) grounder was misplayed. Moore then tied the score with a clutch two-out RBI single to score Hadjipanayis.

Game 2 – Babson 3, Gettysburg 2 (10 innings)

O'Reilly scattered four hits and a walk in a complete-game effort for the Beavers, allowing two unearned runs and striking out 18, one shy of her career high. She won the pitching duel over junior Paige Forry (Reading, Pa.), who allowed three unearned runs on four hits and a walk while fanning eight.

Musco, Hadjipanayis, Hennessy and first-year Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) collected singles for the Beavers. Senior Julia Smith (Marydel, Md.) tripled and scored for the Bullets, first-year Audrey Bergan (Encinitas, Calif.) had a pair of hits and senior Bailey Quinn (Hanford, Calif.) singled in the loss.

Gettysburg took a 1-0 lead on the first batter of the game when Smith led off with a triple to right center field and then scored on a throwing error. Babson tied things up in the third inning when Hennessy reached on a one-out single and came all the way around to score on an infield throwing error. The Bullets pulled ahead 2-1 in the fifth inning on Quinn's two-out RBI single to right center, but the Beavers answered in the last of the sixth on Musco's RBI single.

Babson stranded runners at second and third in both the eighth and ninth innings before breaking through in the 10th. Raymond started the frame at second base, advanced to third on a sac bunt by Hadjipanayis and scored the winning run on an infield error.

After taking Tuesday off, Babson will be back on the diamond with a pair of games on Wednesday, facing Carroll (Wisc.) at 4:45 p.m. and McDaniel (Md.) at 6:45 p.m.
