Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 8 Elmira Nips Men's Ice Hockey in OT in NEHC Quarterfinal, 3-2

PINE VALLEY, N.Y.— Senior Amadeo Mastrangeli (Richmond Hill, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal less than nine minutes into overtime as fourth-seeded and eighth-ranked Elmira College edged fifth-seeded Babson College, 3-2, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Tournament men's ice hockey quarterfinal Saturday evening inside the Murray Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Beavers had a three-game winning streak snapped and finish the season at 14-10-2 overall. Elmira won for the fourth time in its last five outings and improved to 19-6-1 and will advance to the semifinals next Saturday. It is a payback victory for the Soaring Eagles, who were defeated by Babson in overtime in the 2022 NEHC semifinals by the same 3-2 score.

Sophomore Nolan Woudenberg (Collegeville, Pa.) and junior Wyatt George (Mount Lebanon, Pa.) scored goals for the Beavers, and first-year Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.), sophomores Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario) and Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), and senior Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded assists in the setback. First-year goalie Mason Rosado (Weddington, N.C.) matched his career high with 33 saves in goal, including six in overtime, but took the tough-luck loss.

Senior Nicholas Domitrovic (Ottawa, Ontario) scored the first two goals for the Soaring Eagles, classmate Janis Vizbelis (Riga, Latvia) registered a pair of assists, and Mastrangeli, senior Chance Gorman (Flemington, N.J.) and junior Nathan Young (New Market, Md.) collected one assist each. Sophomore Kyle Curtin (St. George, Ontario) finished with 35 saves in goal to record the win.

Domitrovic gave the hosts an early lead, converting a cross-ice pass by Vizbelis from the right boards and burying a shot from the left circle just three and a half minutes into the game. Elmira had a 12-9 shot advantage in the opening frame but had to settle for the one-goal lead.

The upset-minded Beavers evened the score at the 13:09 mark of the second period when Woudenberg intercepted a clearing attempt at the blue line and snapped a shot from the high slot that beat Curtin for his second goal of the season. Babson killed off a pair of penalties in the middle stanza, including a five-minute major, outshot the hosts 17-10 in the period, and went into the third tied at 1-1.

Elmira needed just 16 seconds to regain the lead at the start of the third as Domitrovic and Vizbelis connected again, Domitrovic redirecting a crossing pass from his linemate at the top of the crease past Rosado to make it 2-1. The Beavers answered at the 7:10 mark, as Kramer outmuscled the opponents for the puck behind the Elmira net, and found Murphy in the right circle. Murphy passed across to a wide open George in the left circle and George buried the puck into an open net for the back door goal and a 2-2 tie.

The Soaring Eagles had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal in overtime, not counting Vizbelis hitting the post in the eighth minute. Rosado made some terrific saves, including a diving stop on Mastrangeli on a rebound attempt, but Mastrangeli ended it with the game-winner from the right boards through traffic just inside the left post.

Babson finished with a 37-36 advantage in shots on goal and both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
