NEW LONDON, Conn.—The Coast Guard Academy overcame a 10-point first-half deficit to defeat visiting Babson College, 67-55, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Roland Hall.
With the loss, Babson ends the regular season at 12-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play. Coast Guard improves to 15-10 overall and is now 8-8 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers will be the fourth seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament and will host the fifth-seeded Bears on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Graduate student
Steph Baxter (Worcester, Mass.) finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists, while sophomore
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Beavers. Fellow sophomore
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points, seven boards and two blocks in the loss.
Sophomore Elijah Parent (Bristol, Conn.) tied for game-high honors with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while junior Cameron Brown (Ellicot City, Md.), first-year Jordan Frazer (Columbia, S.C.) and sophomore Mitch Shettles (New Albany, Miss.) all scored 10 points to lead the Bears. Brown also blocked six shots and pulled down seven rebounds in the win.
Leading 8-6 just over five minutes into the contest, the Green and White got back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore
Mark Woolhouse (Lebanon, N.J.) and first-year
NeJohn Fortes (New Bedford, Mass.) and a bucket from Lauder to push the margin to 16-6 at the 11:12 mark. Lauder followed up triples by O'Toole and junior
Aidan Horan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) to extend Babson's advantage back to 31-21 with less than five minutes to go in the stanza before Coast Guard closed with a 9-2 run to get within three at the half.
The lead changed hands five times over the first four minutes of the second half before six consecutive points by Frazer keyed a 12-0 run that gave the Bears a 50-38 lead on sophomore Luke Farrell's (Ortley, N.J.) free throw with 13:01 to play. The lead swelled to 55-40 on a three-pointer by Frazer and a jumper by Parent at the 11:18 mark and the Beavers were unable to get back within single digits until O'Toole hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the margin to 60-51 with just 5:31 remaining.
Babson was unable to get any closer though, as it got just a pair of buckets by junior
David Cross (Cinnaminson, N.J.) over the final five minutes.
The Beavers, who finished with a 42-34 edge on the glass, shot just 33.8 percent from the field. The Bears shot 50 percent in the second half and 46.3 percent for the game while turning 15 Babson turnovers into 17 points.
