Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 7 Field Hockey Falls to No. 11 Bates in NCAA Second Round, 2-1

MEDFORD, Mass. — Senior Anna Lindeis (New Canaan, Conn.) finished with a goal and an assist as No. 11 Bates College defeated No. 7 Babson College, 2-1, in an NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament second-round match-up Saturday afternoon at Tufts University's Ounian Field.

With the loss, the Beavers had their 14-game winning streak snapped and finish the season at 19-4 overall. The Bobcats improved to 14-6 overall and advance to the tournament quarterfinals for the first time in program history, and will take on No. 3 Tufts on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Junior Laney Reed (West Chester, Pa.) scored the lone goal for the Beavers with an assist from graduate student Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.). Senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made one save in goal and took the tough-luck loss for the Green and White.

Senior Anna Cote (New Gloucester, Maine) scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Bobcats and senior Amanda Zerbib (Larchmont, N.Y.) and junior Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg (Winchester, Mass.) registered assists. First-year goalie Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) had a huge impact with eight saves in the victory.

Bates scored the first goal of the game on the penalty corner in the seventh minute of the first period. Zerbib stopped the insertion from Moloney-Kolenberg at the top of the circle and Lindeis fired a shot through traffic in front and through the pads of Furmanek to put the Bobcats on the board.

Babson pulled even late in the opening frame after first-year Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) sent a long ball from the right side into the scoring circle. Guden push the ball into the slot, where Reed was left unguarded and she hit a sweeping shot past a charging Donohue and into the cage to make it 1-1 after one.

The Beavers, who had a 5-1 advantage in shots in the first quarter, continued the pressure in the second stanza with a 2-1 shot margin, but Donohue made one save as the team went to the intermission tied at one.

The Bobcats pulled ahead again on another penalty corner five minutes into the third quarter. After receiving the insertion, Cote worked a give and go with Lindeis and one-timed a sweeping shot past Furmanek inside the left post for a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute.

Babson kept up the pressure on the Bobcat goal, with Donohue making a pair of saves on graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) and senior Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.). Senior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) also hit a long shot from outside the circle that deflected off a defender inside the zone but bounced high off the left post behind Donohue. Furmanek also made a stop on sophomore Sophie O'Sullivan (Wellesley, Mass.) to keep it a one-goal affair.

The Green and White managed five shots in both the third and fourth quarters but could not get an equalizer. Sharrow and Guden got off shots after a penalty corner in the 51st minute, and after the Beavers removed Furmanek in favor of an additional attacker with three minutes remaining, junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) had one last shot in the 59th minute but her rip from the left side was denied by Donohue.

Babson finished with a 17-10 lead in shots, including 9-3 in shots on goal, while Bates had a slim 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.
