No. 12 Men’s Soccer Erupts for Five Goals in NEWMAC Win over Emerson, 5-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Liam Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) score two goals and sophomore McKenzy Pierre (West Orange, N.J.) added a goal and an assist as No. 12 Babson College erupted for its highest output of the season in a 5-0 win over Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the victory, Babson remains undefeated on the season at 5-0-6 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play while Emerson drops to 3-6-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Graduate student Kento Abe (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) also scored for the Beavers. Grad student James Donaldson (Kirkland, Quebec) collected two assists, juniors Joao Araujo (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Liam Goldstein (Princeton, N.J.) and sophomore Luca Tusche (Montville, N.J.) had one helper each, and senior Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) and first-year Jeffrey Montague (Lutz, Fla.) combined on the shutout in goal despite neither being forced to make a save.

Sophomore Wylie Jelinek (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered four saves in goal for the Lions, who were outshot 17-3 in the contest.

Abe gave the Beavers an early lead with a goal in the ninth minute. He sent a free kick from the left side about 25 yards out to the far post and no one was able to get a head or a foot on it and it curled inside the right post for his second goal of the season.

The Green and White potted a pair of goals three minutes apart late in the half to balloon the lead to 3-0 at the break. Tusche sent a long ball from along the right sideline toward the far post where Pierre flicked it past a diving Jelinek just inside the post in the 42nd minute for his first of the season. Donaldson sent a through ball to Pierre on the right side of the box and he pushed a cross in the middle to Rhatigan, who tapped it into an open net for his first of the campaign with just 54 seconds left in the half.

Yablonovskiy pushed the margin to 4-0 five minutes into the second half. Araujo sent a long free kick from the left side into the box; Goldstein sent it toward the goal with a header and Yablonovskiy finished it off with a header of his own just inside the left post. Rhatigan rounded out the scoring in the 70th minute as Donaldson danced around a trio of defenders before passing to Rhatigan in front of the goal and Rhatigan one-timed it with his left foot past Jelinek to make it a 5-0 game with 20 minutes remaining.

The Lions prevented further damage with field players clearing the ball off the goal line twice in the second half as the Beavers outshot the visitors 10-3 in the second half.
