Women's Hoops Knocks Off No. 21/18 Tufts, 60-42

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Juniors Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) and Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) both scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as Babson College upset No. 21 D3hoops.com/No. 18 WBCA Tufts University, 60-42, on Sunday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.

With the victory, Babson improves to 6-7 on the year. Tufts, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, drops to 9-4 overall.

First-year Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished with 12 points, three assists and two steals and sophomore Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) added 10 points and four rebounds for the Beavers. Classmate Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) also contributed six points and five boards in the win.

Junior Sofia Gonzalez (Glendale, Calif.) scored 12 points, while sophomore Sophia Davis (Piscataway, N.J.) chipped in with six points and a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Jumbos. Senior Maggie Russell (Morristown, N.J.), who played just three minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, was held to a season-low four points in the loss.

Silk and Reale combined for nine points to help the Green and White jump out to an 11-2 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Gonzalez and sophomore Annie Aspesi (Ardmore, Pa.) hit back-to-back three-pointers to end the first quarter cutting the Tufts' deficit to just two, and Gonzalez followed up four straight points by Davis with another triple extending the Jumbos' advantage to 24-18 at the 6:08 mark of the second.

The Beavers got nine points from Mollica and Carlo to pull within 30-27 at the break before opening the third quarter with a 14-1 run to seize control of the game. Two layups by Silk and another by senior Rachel McMenemy (Northborough, Mass.) gave the hosts a 33-30 edge and Mollica followed hoops by Perreault and Reale with a triple to make it 41-31 with 4:07 to go in the stanza.

Tufts got within 10 to close the third but Silk started the fourth with three straight points and Perrault knocked down a jumper and buried a pair of free throws to stretch the Babson lead to 52-36 with 3:43 remaining. Russell's first hoop of the afternoon cut the Jumbos' deficit to 53-40 at the 3:01 mark but Carlo went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe and Reale finished off a driving layup late in the shot clock to regain a 16-point advantage with 1:57 left.

The Beavers shot 44.4 percent from the floor, finished with a 40-31 edge on the glass and outscored the visitors 24-16 in the paint. Tufts shot a season-low 23.3 percent and committed 17 turnovers in the loss.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Springfield at 6 p.m., while Tufts hosts Amherst on Friday at 7 p.m.
