Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Bailey’s Two Late Goals Lifts Men's Ice Hockey Past Southern Maine, 4-3

GORHAM, Maine—Senior defenseman Colby Bailey (Southborough, Mass.) scored the tying goal at 17:24 of the third period and added the game winner 61 seconds into overtime as Babson College rallied for a 4-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

With the victory, Babson won for the third time in its last four outings to improve to 9-6-2 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play while Southern Maine is winless in its last five games (0-4-1) and drops to 5-9-2 overall and 2-6-2 in the NEHC.

Bailey finished the game with two goals and an assist, and sophomores Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and Ian Driscoll (Middleton, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Sophomore Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario) recorded a pair of helpers, classmate Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.) added one assist, and first-year Mason Rosado (Weddington, N.C.) made 17 saves to earn the win in goal for the Green and White.

Junior Jeff Pollara (Braintree, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals for the Huskies and senior Curtis Judd (Newton, Mass.) scored once in the setback. First-years Ethan McDuff (Lloydminster, Alberta) and Marcus Torgner (Mjolby, Sweden) and senior Austin Marini (Hyde Park, Mass.) collected assists, and junior Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass.) made 31 saves but took the loss.

The Huskies scored the only goal of the first period at the 4:46 mark after a Babson turnover behind its own net left the puck out in front of the goal and Judd buried the puck into an open net. USM doubled its lead with the only goal of the second frame when Pollara intercepted an errant Babson breakout pass and went in alone on Rosado, made a deke and fired into the back of the net at 6:24 for a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Babson began its comeback at 1:31 of the third period when Murphy converted a feed from Kennedy on a transition goal to put the visitors on the board. The Beavers evened the score three and a half minutes later with a power play goal as Driscoll stuffed in the rebound after Penton made a save on Kennedy from the left circle.

USM regained the lead at 11:01 on Pollara's second of the game, a slap shot from top of right circle through traffic inside right post. Bailey matched that with his first of the game at 17:24 on the power play, ripping a shot from the top of the right circle inside the left post to tie the score and set up the overtime.

Bailey potted the game-winner in the first minute of the extra session during a 4-on-3 power play, firing a one-timer from the top of left circle off a feed from Murphy.

Babson finished with a 35-20 advantage in shots and went 3-for-4 on the power play while killing the only Husky opportunity.

The two teams face a challenging weekend ahead, traveling to western New York as Babson takes on No. 1 Hobart on Friday and No. 2 Elmira on Saturday while Southern Maine visits Elmira on Friday and Hobart on Saturday.
