Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Cruises Past Roger Williams in Home Opener, 8-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) scored twice and classmate Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) added a goal and an assist to help No. 7 Babson College roll to a 7-1 win over visiting Roger Williams University in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday night at MacDowell Field.

With the win, Babson improves to 3-0 on the year while Roger Williams slips to 2-1.

Seniors Meghan Diamond (Hingham, Mass.) and Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.), junior Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.), sophomore Laney Reed (West Chester, Pa.) and first-year Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) each scored once in the victory for the Beavers. Graduate student Meara Hanyon (Brodheadsville, Pa.) led all players with two assists and junior goalkeeper Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) stopped one shot to earn her third win of the year.

Junior Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) had a goal and sophomore Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) chipped in with an assist for the Hawks. Fellow sophomore Hannah Brazil (East Sandwich, Mass.), who played the final 56 minutes of the game, made six saves in the loss.

The Green and White started fast scoring twice in less than four minutes to start the contest. McGrath chipped a shot into the upper left corner for her second marker of the season just 1:07 into the game and Walsh slipped home a rebound of a shot by Sharrow to make it 2-0 at the 3:40 mark.

Roger Williams cut its deficit in half with 2:14 left in the first quarter as Stevens drilled a shot through traffic from the top of the circle following a penalty corner. The Beavers responded with two more tallies less than five minutes apart to build a three-goal halftime advantage.

Marguerite collected a loose ball and jammed it home at the left post 6:38 into the second period and Sharrow followed with a blast from the left side of the circle following a corner to make it 4-1 with 3:47 to go before the break. McGrath extended the lead to four with 5:20 left in the third quarter burying a feed from Hanyon following another corner.

Reed tipped in a pass from Walsh for her second career goal with three minutes remaining in the third and Braren notched her first career tally 2:58 into the fourth for the Green and White. Diamond capped the scoring with the first goal of her career 1:26 to go for the final margin.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Williams for an 11 a.m. match, while Roger Williams visits Westfield State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
