BOSTON, Mass.—Graduate student
Justin Stone (Cary, N.C.) scored two goals and junior keeper
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made six saves in 81 minutes in goal as No. 18 Babson College registered a 3-0 victory over Emerson College Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action at Rotch Field.
With the victory, Babson posted its fifth victory in the last six games to improve to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC while Emerson dropped to 5-3-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The win also was the 450th in the career of head coach
Jon Anderson '75, who ranks fifth among active coaches and 14th all-time in Division III in victories.
First-year
Will Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers and graduate students
Ryan Grund (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and
Sam Morgan (Charles Town, W. Va.) recorded assists in the win. Senior
Mack Lemkau (Bedford, N.Y.) came on in relief of White for the last nine minutes and made two saves.
First-year Beckett Hobbs (Issaquah, Wash.) had a busy day in the Lions goal and finished with a season-high 15 saves.
Babson outshot the hosts 14-5 in the first half but could not put one in the back of the net, thanks to eight saves by Hobbs. First-year
McKenzy Pierre (West Orange, N.J.) nearly scored in the closing seconds of the half but his long-range shot from the left wing sailed just high.
Stone needed just 80 seconds of second-half play to break the scoreless deadlock. Morgan sent a cross from the right corner to Stone in front, and Stone redirected the ball past Hobbs into the left side of the net.
The Beavers doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Grund sent a pass from the right side through two defenders to a wide-open Lloyd near the top of the box. Lloyd had time to settle before ripping a shot inside the right post for a two-goal margin.
Just over a minute later, Stone outmuscled an Emerson defender to pounce on a loose ball in the box and hit a shot off the keeper's outstretched hand into the left side of the goal for his second of the game and fourth of the season.
Babson continued to control play over the final 30 minutes, finishing with a 16-6 shot advantage in the second half and a 30-11 margin for the game, including 19-8 in shots on goal. The Green and White took five of the seven corner kicks in the game.
The Beavers return home to host Tufts in a key non-conference match on Tuesday at Hartwell-Rogers Field at 3:30 p.m. Emerson travels to Westfield State for non-conference play Tuesday at 7 p.m.
