Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 3 Field Hockey Overpowers Clark in NEWMAC Opener, 7-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) finished with two goals and one assist to reach 100 points for her career as third-ranked Babson College rolled to a 7-0 win over visiting Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Friday night at MacDowell Field.

Babson, which extended its NEWMAC regular season winning streak to 51 games, improves to 6-0 overall and opens league play 1-0. Clark is now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Graduate student Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) recorded a goal and two assists, senior Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a goal and assist, and junior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.), sophomore Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) and first-year Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) each added a marker for the Beavers. Junior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) chipped in with an assist and classmate Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made one save to post her second shutout of the year.

Sophomore Loren Root (Sherborn, Mass.) made a season-high 19 saves in the loss for the Cougars.

McGrath gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest working a give-and-go with Walsh before hitting a shot inside the left post. She added to the Beavers' lead with 1:57 to go in the first quarter jamming home her own rebound following a corner.

Marguerite extended Babson's advantage to 3-0 just 2:16 into the second quarter with a one-timer off of Evans' pass across the front of goal for her fourth marker of the season. Root made four saves late in the period before the hosts broke the game open with a pair of tallies just 20 seconds apart early in the third.

Caroline DiGiovanni redirected McGrath's blast from the top of the circle 2:21 into the stanza and Walsh collected a feed from Marguerite in the center of the circle and drilled a shot back inside the left post to make it 5-0 at the 2:41 mark.

Helen DiGiovanni collected a loose ball and pushed it past Root for her first collegiate goal 4:06 into the fourth quarter, while Powers capped the scoring with a blast from the top of the circle for her second career goal with 6:04 to play for the final margin.

The Beavers finished with a 40-1 edge in shots and attempted all 27 corners in the game.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it travels to No. 1 Middlebury at 2 p.m., while Clark travels to Boston to take on Simmons on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
