MANCHESTER, Vt.— First-year Reece Willison (Simsbury, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with just 13 ticks left in the second half to push 12th-ranked Williams College to a 2-1 victory over Babson College on day two of the Manchester Women's College Cup soccer tournament Sunday afternoon at Applejack Stadium.
With the loss, the Beavers dropped to 1-2-1 on the season while Williams won its second straight game to improve to 2-0-1 on the year.
Sophomore
Meredith Greeley (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) scored the lone goal for the Beavers. First-year keeper
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made nine saves for the second game in a row but suffered the tough-luck loss.
Junior Tori Huang (Arlington, Mass.) also scored for the Ephs and first-year Isabel Konijnenberg (Woodstock, Vt.) and senior Jaquelin Nordhoff (Seattle, Wash.) produced assists in the win. Sophomore Margaret Huelin (Farmington, Conn.) made two saves in the first half and first-year Ana Bozzi-Mackay (Los Angeles, Calif.) matched her with two stops in the second half to earn the win.
Babson had the first chance at scoring in the eighth minute after junior
Laura Lukowicz (Coventry, R.I.) booted a lead pass over the top of the Williams defense to send classmate
Elisa Diletizia (Canton, Mass.) in on a partial breakaway, but her shot was denied by Huelin. Williams had its first good scoring opportunity in the 27th minute but Cottone made a solid save off a header near the left post.
The Beavers broke through with the first goal of the contest off a corner kick in the 28th minute. A short pass from the left side was sent to Greeley, who spun to split three Eph defenders and fired a left-footed shot to the far post just inside the right upright to put the Beavers on the scoreboard.
Williams produced the equalizer in the 38th minute. First-year Bria Abbiati (Newton, Mass.) sent a through ball into space along the left end line, where Konijnenberg retrieved it and found a wide open Huang in front of the goal and Huang ripped a shot past a helpless Cottone to tie the score. Cottone made two more saves in the final two minutes of the half to keep the score tied.
The Ephs controlled much of the play in the second half but could not get one past Cottone, who made six saves over the final 45 minutes. Williams outshot Babson 13-4 after the break but to no avail.
The game appeared to be headed to a deadlock, but Williams was awarded a free kick from about 40 yards away from the Beaver goal as time wound down. Nordhoff delivered the kick and Willson got through the Babson defense to got a piece of the ball with a header for the game-winner.
Williams finished with a 23-12 advantage in shots, 11-5 in shots on goal, and had an 8-1 margin in corner kicks.
The Beavers return to action with the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday at Wheaton, beginning at 1 p.m. Williams returns home to host Springfield on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Cole Field.
