Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Visiting Babson College suffered a 1-0 loss in the opener and responded with a 7-4 win in game two of Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.
Babson, which has won seven of its last eight games, is now 9-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Springfield has dropped three of its last four contests and is 7-10-1 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Springfield 1, Babson 0
Senior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) struck out six and allowed just one run on five hits over 8.0 innings but suffered his first loss of the season to slip to 2-1 for the Beavers. Sophomore Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) went 2-for-4, while junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) each singled in the loss.
Junior Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) was 2-for-3 and drove in the lone run of the game in support of seniors senior Blake Roberge (Warwick, R.I.) and Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.), who limited Babson to just five hits. DeGirolamo (1-2) fanned one and retired all nine batters he faced in relief of Roberge, who gave up five hits and four walks while striking out four in 6.0 innings.
The Green and White left the bases loaded in the first and had its leadoff man reach in four straight innings from the second through the fifth but was unable to get on the scoreboard. Noone retired nine straight batters after issuing a pair of walks in the bottom of the first and mowed down eight straight Springfield hitters after giving up consecutive singles to start the fourth.
The Pride stranded a pair in scoring position in the sixth before scratching out the game's only run in the eighth. Senior Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) led off with a single and classmate Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) was hit by a pitch before Noone got the first out of the frame with a grounder to first leaving runners on the corners. Sorgi drove in Traversa with a sacrifice fly to right one batter later
Game 2: Babson 7, Springfield 4
Savage went 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored, Hvozdovic was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and junior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored to pace the Beavers' 13-hit attack. Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) tripled and drove in three runs in support of classmate Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) who improved to 3-0 after giving up three runs and scattering eight hits over 6.1 innings.
Junior Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and senior Noah Diamond (Glastonbury, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Pride. Junior Connor Caverly (South Berwick, Maine) was chased in the fourth after allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks in just 3.1 innings to slip to 2-2 on the season.
The Green and White stranded a pair of runners in the first before exploding for five runs in the second. First-year Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) got things started with an RBI single through the right side for a 1-0 lead before Hvozdovic plated a pair of runs with a two-out single to right and Cook knocked in two more with his first triple of the season for a 5-0 advantage.
Santos led off the fourth with a single to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Cook to make it 6-0 before Diamond got the Pride on the board with a two-out RBI knock in the bottom of the frame. The hosts cut its deficit to 6-2 on an RBI single by Barrett in the fifth and took advantage of an error to pull within 6-4 in the last of the seventh.
Senior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) worked around a two-out double in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth after graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) tacked on an insurance run with a two-out infield single for his first save of the year.
Babson returns to action on Monday when it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m., while Springfield visits MIT on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 40-23 all-time against Springfield and the game one loss snapped their 17-game winning streak in the series over the last decade.
• Savage extended his hitting streak to 14 games and is tied with Hvozdovic for the team lead with eight multi-hit games, while Santos has reached base safely in a team-high 17 straight outings.
• The game one setback marked the first time since April 4, 2014, that the Beavers have dropped a 1-0 decision.
• Babson is now 8-1 this season when scoring at least six runs.
