FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—Senior
Kelly Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) scored 19 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and surpassed 1,000 for her career but it wasn't enough as visiting Babson College was defeated by Framingham State University, 64-61, in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night inside Logan Gymnasium.
Babson, which has dropped two straight games, slips to 4-5 on the year, while Framingham State improves to 8-0 overall.
Walsh reached double figures in scoring for the 19th time in her last 20 games and added six rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks to pace the Beavers. Junior
Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) scored 13 points and added four rebounds and three steals, while first-year
Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) came off the bench to contribute nine points and six boards.
Junior Kelsey Yelle (South Easton, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Rams. Senior Flannery O'Connor (Amesbury, Mass.) produced 16 points six boards and four assists, junior Chloe Rayko (Coventry, R.I.) added 13 points and senior Gwendolyn Carpenter (Ashley Falls, Mass.) led all players with 12 assists in the win.
Framingham State responded to an early six-point deficit with six consecutive points by Yelle and a bucket by O'Connor on its opening possession of the second quarter to build a 15-10 lead. O'Connor followed up a jumper by Babson sophomore
Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) with another hoop and the Rams got a three-pointer from Rayko and back-to-back hoops by Yelle and junior Katherine Haselton (Greenfield, Mass.) to take their largest lead of the game at 24-12 with 5:04 to go before halftime.
A layup by junior
Meghan Goode (Chelmsford, Mass.) and a three-pointer by Mollica cut the Beavers' deficit to 30-23 at the half, and Walsh sandwiched a layup and a triple around another trifecta by Mollica to pull within 34-31 less than 90 seconds into the third quarter. Haselton scored on consecutive trips to push the Framingham State advantage back to seven at the 4:29 mark and O'Connor and Yelle each scored over the final 1:38 of the stanza to keep the hosts in front 47-41 going to the fourth.
Three-pointers by Reale and Walsh closed the margin to just one at 49-48 with 4:41 to play and the Green and White answered four straight free throws by O'Connor with a layup by Walsh and a triple from Mollica to pull even at 53 with 2:37 remaining. Yelle put the Rams in front for good by converting a three-point play on the ensuing possession before Walsh got Babson back within 60-59 on another bucket by Walsh with 33 seconds to go.
Walsh scored again following two free throws by Carpenter to again cut the deficit to one but Mollica's deep three-pointer after Carpenter went 2-of-2 at the charity stripe with 0:09 left glanced off the front iron.
The Beavers shot 40 percent from the floor and finished with a 39-36 edge on the glass, which included turning 15 offensive rebounds into 17 second chance points in the loss. The Rams shot 42.4 percent and outscored the visitors 10-3 at the free throw line and 36-30 in the paint.
Babson returns to action on December 29 when it hosts Susquehanna in the opening round of the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament at 1 p.m., while Framingham State takes on Rivier on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
