Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 2 Field Hockey Overpowers Springfield in NEWMAC Semifinals, 9-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate students Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) combined for five goals to help top-seeded and second-ranked Babson College cruise to a 9-0 win over fifth-seeded Springfield College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal on Thursday night at MacDowell Field.

Babson, which has won 13 consecutive games, improves to 19-1 and advances to its fourth straight NEWMAC Tournament final, while Springfield sees its season come to a close at 10-10.

Walsh scored three times, McGrath had two goals and juniors Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Laney Reed (West Chester, Pa.) all provided a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Senior Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) also scored, graduate student Meara Hanyon (Brodheadsville, Pa.) chipped in with an assist and junior goalkeeper Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made one save to record her 11th shutout of the season.

Senior Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) made a season-high 18 saves for the Pride.

Marguerite opened the scoring 4:50 into the match when she collected a feed from Evans and beat Niland with a shot inside the left post for her seventh goal of the year. Reed made it 2-0 four minutes later when she collected the rebound of a shot by first-year Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) and pushed it around Niland before hitting the open net for her third marker of the fall.

Niland made seven saves in the second quarter to keep Springfield close before Walsh scored the first of her two goals after weaving through the Pride defense to extend the margin to 3-0 just 55 seconds before halftime.

The Green and White broke the game open with three third-quarter tallies. Sharrow one-timed a rocket past Niland just 1:52 into the period, Walsh intercepted a clearing past and tucked her finish inside the left post at the 38:57 mark and Evans stuffed home the rebound of a shot by Walsh with 1:39 left to make it 6-0.

McGrath scored twice in the first six-plus minutes of the fourth and Walsh completed her hat trick with 5:38 to go. Furmanek finished off the shutout with a diving save on Springfield sophomore Nicolette Morlock (Rexford, N.Y.) with 2:17 remaining following a penalty corner.

The Beavers finished with a 36-1 edge in shots and attempted 24 of the 25 penalty corners on the night.

Babson will host second-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC Tournament final on Saturday at 12 p.m.
