Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gazo's Late Goal Helps No. 9 Men's Soccer Edge Salve Regina, 1-0

NEWPORT, R.I.—Senior Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 84th minute to lift No. 9 Babson College to a 1-0 win over Salve Regina University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

With the win, Babson extended its unbeaten streak to four games and improved to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play. Salve Regina has dropped three straight matches to slip to 5-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the NEWMAC.

First-year Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) picked up an assist and junior goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made six saves, all in the first half, to record his seventh shutout of the season for the Beavers.

Junior Aidan Figueira (Cumberland, R.I.) turned away five shot for the Seahawks, who were blanked for the third game in a row.

The Green and White dominated the second half and finally broke through following a wild sequence with under six minutes to play. First-year Ted Rosenfeld (Morristown, N.J.) flicked a ball over the Salve Regina defense and Yablonovskiy was dragged down in the box as he ran onto it setting up a penalty kick. Figueira guessed correctly and made a sprawling save on Gazo's attempt but Yablonovskiy was first to the rebound and his header set up Gazo's finish inside the six-yard box for the decisive goal.

The Beavers outshot the Seahawks over the final 45 minutes but were unable to breakthrough until late. Junior Matias Gutierrez (Coral Gables, Fla.) saw his flick go just wide of the left post following a long throw-in in the 70th minute and a Salve Regina defender stuck out his foot to deny Rosenfeld's shot from the penalty spot following a scramble in the box in the 79th minute.

White made his best save of the game in the 26th minute stepping off his line to push senior Jorden Borges' (Milford, Mass.) header over the crossbar and out of danger following a free kick. Sophomore Aaron Muncaster's (Oakdale, Conn.) 25-yard rocket went off the outside of the left post in the 27th minute and classmate Ben Tomas (Danbury, Conn.) saw his bid to open the scoring sail just over the crossbar in the 42nd minute.

The Beavers finished the game with a slim 12-10 edge in shots and attempted four of the five corner kicks.

Both sides return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Brandeis at 3:30 p.m., while Salve Regina travels to Westfield at 7 p.m.
