Women's Lacrosse Blanks Mount Holyoke for NEWMAC Triumph, 18-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) each tallied four goals and one assist and nine different players scored goals, including all three seniors on Senior Day, as Babson College blanked Mount Holyoke College, 18-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, Babson won its second game in a row to improve to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC while Mount Holyoke fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The game had a 90-minute lightning delay in the third quarter and the game was ended after another lightning delay with nine minutes left on the clock.

Junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) also recorded two goals and two assists for the Beavers and senior Brooke Leveillee (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first-year Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) also scored two goals each in the win. First-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist, and senior Gwen Borning (East Falmouth, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the year.

The Beavers also got 10 draw controls from first-year Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) and team-highs of five ground balls and two caused turnovers from Leveillee. First-year goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made three saves to preserve the whitewash.

Mount Holyoke got a strong performance from senior Emma Bowler (West Springfield, Mass.), who made nine saves in her first appearance of the year between the pipes. Senior Allie Brown (Burlington, Vt.) collected four draw controls, while senior Emma Legacki (Pennington, N.J.) finished with two draw controls and two ground balls.

Babson wasted no time in taking control of the game. After Novitch and Dodge scored in the first three minutes, Jayne and Solana Fahey (North Andover, Mass.) found the net just 31 second apart to put the Beavers up 4-0 before the game was five minutes old. Jayne scored her first of the game and assisted Kaskey on the next one before Dodge and Kaskey tacked on two more unassisted goals to put the Green and White up, 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Jayne scored twice and Dodge set up Blake to account for all of the scoring in the second quarter, and the Beavers added four more in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter to open up a 15-0 lead. With 4:21 on the clock, the game was halted for a lightning delay. When play resumed 90 minutes later, Leveillee scored her second to make it 16-0 at the end of the third quarter. Borning and Connolly finished off free-position goals early in the fourth quarter, but more lightning was in the area and the rest of the game was cancelled.

Babson finished with a 30-6 margin in shots, an 15-7 advantage in draw controls, and a 23-6 lead in ground balls. The Beavers were good on 11-of-13 clear attempts while holding Holyoke to just 4-of-14 on clears, including 1-of-10 after the first quarter.

Both teams are back in action with conference games on Wednesday, Babson visiting Wheaton for a 7 p.m. match-up and Mount Holyoke going rival Smith College for a 6 p.m. contest.
