Women's Lacrosse Pulls Off Upset at Williams, 13-12

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.— Junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) tallied six points on five goals and an assist and Babson College rode the momentum of a 8-1 second quarter lead to record a 13-12 victory over Williams College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Farley-Lamb Field.

The Beavers won for the third time in their last four outings to improve to 6-5 overall, while the Ephs had their three-game winning streak snapped and slipped to 3-5.

Dodge matched her career high with five goals, while junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) added four goals and classmate Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) contributed a goal, two assists and a career-high seven ground balls. Sophomores Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) and Genevieve Bushey (Lakeville, Conn.) and first-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) added one goal each in the victory.

Senior Madison Fulcher-Melendy (Easthampton, Mass.) led the home team with four goals and an assist, while junior Lily Warendorf (Norwell, Mass.) contributed two goals and an assist, first-year Claudia Russell (Danville, Calif.) added two goals, and junior Shea van Deb Broek (Darien, Conn.) chipped in with a goal and three assists. Senior Mason Yonge (Gainesville, Fla.) finished with one goal and a team-high five ground balls.

The Beavers came out strong and scored the first three goals of the game, two by Dodge and a free-position shot by Jayne, before the game was six minutes old. Russell put the Ephs on the board, but Babson continued to put on the pressure, scoring four consecutive goals on free-position shots, including two more by Dodge and one each by Novitch and Jayne, to give the visitors a surprising 7-1 lead after the first quarter.

Jayne notched her third goal of the game, with an assist from Kaskey, to start the second quarter as Babson opened its largest lead of the game, 8-1. Williams came alive, firing in four unanswered goals in less than three minutes, including two by Fulcher-Melendy, to pull back to within three midway through the frame. The visitors regained the momentum with three of the next four goals, including a goal and an assist by Dodge, but Fulcher-Melendy got one back in the closing seconds and Babson took an 11-7 lead into the intermission.

Each team scored twice in the third quarter, Bushey and Jayne for Babson and Warendorf and Fulcher-Melendy for Williams as the Beavers maintained the four-goal lead heading into the final frame.

After 22 goals were scored in the first three quarters, defenses tightened in the fourth and just two goals were added to the scoreboard in the first 12 minutes, both by Williams to cut the margin to 13-11. Russell tacked one on for the Ephs with 3:11 remaining to make it a one-goal game.

After Babson ran the clock down to the final minute, Williams had one final possession with a chance to tie it but came up empty. The Beavers overcame a yellow card and held off two free position attempts by Williams before the clock ran out.

The Beavers finished 7-of-8 on free position shots, while Williams was just 3-of-6. The Beavers won 16 of 29 draws while the Ephs had the advantage in shots (25-19) and ground balls (30-28).
