Women's Lacrosse Tripped Up by Roger Williams, 14-8

BRISTOL, R.I.—Roger Williams took the lead for good with a four-goal run that started in the closing seconds of the first quarter on the way to defeating visiting Babson College, 14-8, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Bayside Field.

Babson, which entered the day having won its last two contests, is now 5-5 on the year, while Roger Williams has won eight consecutive games to improve to 8-1 overall.

Junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) scored three times and senior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) and first-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) registered two goals apiece for the Beavers. Junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) contributed a goal, three assists, four ground balls and two caused turnovers, senior Brooke Leveillee (Longmeadow, Mass.) scooped up four ground balls and first-year Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) collected a game-high five draws in the loss.

Junior Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) recorded a game-high five points with three goals and two assists, while graduate student Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine), senior Nikki Norton (Braintree, Mass.) and juniors Campbell Haller (Nashua, N.H.) and Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) all scored twice to lead the Hawks. Beck also contributed two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in the victory.

Novitch and Dodge buried early free-position chances and Kaskey and Jayne scored 42 seconds apart to tie the game at 4-4 with 1:47 to go in the opening quarter. Sarazin converted Roger Williams' fourth free-position goal with 0:05 left in the first and scored again four minutes into the second, while Beck and sophomore Karli Chaplin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallied just 22 seconds apart to give the Hawks an 8-4 advantage with 7:31 to go until halftime.

Novitch and Norton traded goals late in the second and Haller converted a feed from Beck to stretch the Roger Williams lead to 10-5 just over five minutes into the third quarter. Jayne scored two of the next three goals and Kaskey followed with her second of the day at the 5:09 mark of the third to cut the Babson deficit to 11-8.

Dodge hit the post with 2:18 left in the third and senior Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) made two straight saves to keep the margin at three before Beck and Cavanaugh scored 16 apart to push the Hawks' advantage back to 13-8 with 12:50 to go in the game.

First-year Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) finished with 11 saves for the Beavers, while Goodwin stopped six shots for Roger Williams, which finished with a slim 28-26 edge in shots. Babson led 15-11 in draw controls while both squads picked up 16 ground balls.

Babson returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Williams at 6:30 p.m., while Roger Williams hosts Curry on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 1-1 all-time against Roger Williams.
• Sunday's loss is the first this season for Babson when recording more draw controls than its opponent.
• Jayne, who has scored three or more goals five times this spring, extended her points streak to 20 games, while Dodge and Novitch have a point in five and four straight outings, respectively.
