Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) scored four goals and posted career-highs of seven assists and 11 points and 10 different players scored goals as Babson College cruised past Smith College, 23-8, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse regular season finale Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field.
With the victory, Babson finishes the regular season with a seven-game winning streak and a share of the NEWMAC regular season title. The Beavers head to the post-season at 12-5 overall and 8-1 in the NEWMAC while Smith dropped to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Babson finished tied with Springfield and MIT for first place in the NEWMAC, all with 8-1 conference records. Springfield wins the tiebreaker and receives the No. 1 seed while Babson will be No. 2 and MIT No. 3. The top two seeds earn first-round byes and will host semifinal games next Wednesday, while quarterfinal games will take place this Saturday with third-seeded MIT hosting sixth-seeded Smith and fourth-seeded Coast Guard hosting fifth-seeded Wheaton.
Senior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) contributed five goals and one assist to the victory, while junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) added four goals, four caused turnovers and a career-high 12 draw controls. Junior Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) and first-year Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and one assist each, and first-year Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) scored twice as well.
Sophomore Tatum Galuski (Ipswich, Mass.) led the Pioneers with three goals while first-year Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, Calif.) finished with two goals and one assist. Junior Stella Alphas (Weston, Mass.), Smith's single-season record holder in draw controls, extended her record total with 10 draw controls to a season total of 116, and sophomore Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) picked up a game-high five ground balls.
Babson burst out to a 7-1 lead in the first eight minute of the game, courtesy of two goals each by Jayne and Dodge and one apiece from Blake, Kaskey, and Sypniewski. Jayne added two assists and Kaskey scored twice as the Beavers extended the lead to 10-1 before Tschider and Galuski scored for Smith to cut the deficit to 10-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The teams traded two goals each early on in the second quarter before Jayne added a goal and two assists as Babson pushed its lead to 15-5 at halftime. The Beavers outscored the Pioneers 5-2 in the third frame, including a goal and two assists from Jayne, pulling ahead 20-7 after three, and coasted to the win in the final frame.
First-year goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made seven save saves between the pipes for the Beavers. Senior Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich.) and first-year Paige Rocha (Melrose, Mass.) combined to make six saves for the Pioneers.
The Green and White had a 35-21 advantage in shots, a 22-13 margin in draw controls, and a 20-16 edge in ground balls. The Beavers were good on 10-of-12 on clears while holding Smith to 9-of-18 on clear attempts.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 25-13 all-time against the Pioneers and have won 20 straight games in the series since 2001.
• After edging MIT 17-16 in overtime for its first conference win this spring, the Green and White have outscored the opponents 137-32 in the last seven NEWMAC victories.
• Jayne and Dodge have scored at least one goal in 12 straight games this spring, while Kaskey has scored at least once in 10 in a row.
• The Green and White are 49-6 in games against the NEWMAC going back to 2016, going 24-3 at home and 25-3 on the road.
