Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.— Five players scored two goals each and Babson College used a key six-goal surge in the second half to propel the Beavers to a 13-10 victory over the US Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.
With the victory, Babson posted its sixth straight triumph, improved to 11-5 overall and maintained a share of first place in the NEWMAC with a 7-1 mark. Coast Guard, which had won two straight and nine of its last 10, dropped to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) was the top scorer for Babson with two goals and two assists, while classmate Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) filled up the stat sheet with two goals and one assist along with game-highs of seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. First-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) also tallied two goals and one assist and junior Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Genevieve Bushey (Lakeville, Conn.) scored two goals apiece in the win.
Senior Katherine Pittman (Nantucket, Mass.) and first-year Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.) scored three goals apiece for Coast Guard and first-year Laine Weber (Granite Bay, Calif.) contributed a goal and two assists. Sophomore Mia Becker (Hudson, Ohio) posted a game-high eight draw controls for the Bears in the loss.
The Bears scored three of the first four goals in the opening five minutes of the game, including two by Pittman, but Babson came back with five of the next six goals from five different players over the next 20 minutes to take a 6-4 lead with four minutes to go in the second frame. Coast Guard got one back with two minutes to play but Dodge scored an unassisted goal with 13 seconds on the clock to give the Beavers a 7-5 lead at halftime. Coast Guard came out of the break and scored the first three goals in less than six minutes, including a goal and two assists from Weber, to pull ahead 8-7.
The Beavers came alive and fired in four unanswered goals before the end of the third quarter, one each from Sypniewski, Bushey, Novitch and Jayne, to regain the lead, 11-8. The Green and White tacked on two more to start the fourth quarter, one each from first-years Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) and Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.), to open up their largest lead of the day, 13-8, with 12:44 remaining.
The Beaver defense kept Coast Guard off the scoreboard from the 9:27 mark of the third quarter until Pittman fired in a free position goal with 8:02 on the fourth quarter clock to cut the deficit to 13-9, and Coates added a late goal for the Bears but Babson held on for the 13-10 win.
Babson finished with a 32-18 margin in shots and a 31-24 advantage in ground balls, while Coast Guard won the draw control battle, 16-11. The Beavers were good on 16 of 18 clears while forcing the Bears into 24 turnovers and limiting the hosts to just 13 of 23 on clear attempts.
First-year goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made six saves for Babson and sophomore Devon McCue (Annapolis, Md.) made 10 saves for Coast Guard.
Both teams wrap up the regular season with NEWMAC games on Wednesday as Babson hosts Smith at 6 p.m. and Coast Guard hosts Springfield at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Babson is 8-0 all-time against Coast Guard in a series that dates back to 2015, including 5-0 at Cadet Memorial Field, but Saturday's outcome was the smallest margin of victory in the series.
• The Beavers won for just the second time in seven games when trailing at halftime.
• The Green and White are 11-1 on the year and have won 41 of their last 44 contests when scoring 12 or more goals.
• Jayne extended her consecutive career point scoring streak to 26 games, while Dodge has scored a goal in 11 straight outings.
