Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) matched her career high with five goals and 14 different players scored goals as Babson College overpowered Clark University, 21-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse contest Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the victory, Babson won its second game in a row to improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC while Clark dropped its second straight and dipped to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
First-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) adding to the Babson scoring binge with two goals and one assist, while sophomore Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) chipped in with a pair each. Junior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) and Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) contributed a goal and an assist apiece and first-years Kylie McCarthy (Danvers, Mass.) and Nora Lema (Duxbury, Mass.) each tallied their first career goal.
Jayne also posted a team-high four ground balls, and Connolly grabbed a team-high five draw controls. Jayne, Kaskey and sophomore Genevieve Bushey (Lakeville, Conn.) shared team-high honors with three caused turnovers apiece.
Sophomores Claudia Oakleaf (Westford, Mass.) and Angela Borelli (West Haven, Conn.) tallied the goals for Clark. Senior Sophie Phelan (Westport, Conn.) scooped up a team-high four ground balls and sophomore Jacqueline Faulise (North Kingston, R.I.) contributed three ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Babson led just 3-0 more than 13 minutes into the game on goals by Kaskey, Novitch and Jayne before Borelli scored for Clark to slice the margin to two goals. Connolly scored on a free-position shot and Jayne went back-to-back to close out the first quarter with the hosts leading 6-1.
The Beavers outscored the visitors 6-0 in the second frame to build a comfortable 12-1 margin. Darveau and first-year Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) got the rally started in the first minute and Lema followed with a free-position goal. Jayne tacked on two more before McCarthy found the back of the net to close out the first half at 12-1.
First-years Cameron Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) continued the assault to open the third quarter, and Dodge connected five minutes into the third to extend the margin to 15-1. Oakleaf stopped the bleeding for Clark at the midway point of the quarter, but first-years Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) and Novitch made it 17-2 after three. The Beavers added four goals in the final frame to account for the final score.
Babson finished with a 37-10 margin in shots, an 18-8 advantage in draw controls, and a 21-16 lead in ground balls. The Beavers were good on 11-of-13 clear attempts while holding Clark to just 7-of-20 on clears, including 1-of-8 in the second quarter.
Babson first-year goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) earned the win in goal, making six saves. Junior Maddie Conners (Devon, Pa.) and senior Grave Sawyer (Windham, Maine) combined for eight saves in the Clark goal, Conners with seven in the first three quarters and Sawyer with one in the final frame.
The Beavers are right back in action on Sunday, visiting Roger Williams for a 1 p.m. non-conference encounter. Clark returns home to host Keene State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Babson is now 2-0 all-time against Clark in a series that started last season as the Cougars began their program in 2020.
• The Beavers' 21 goals is the most in a game since a 22-4 victory over Springfield in the 2021 NEWMAC championship game.
• Jayne has recorded at least one point in all 19 of her games dating back to the start of her career in February of 2020.
