Box Score NORTON, Mass.—Sophomore Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) scored a career-high five goals to help head coach Michelle Smith record her 100th career win as Babson College defeated Wheaton College, 20-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Nordin Field.
With its third straight win, Babson improves to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in league play. Wheaton is also 8-5 and slips to 3-2 in the NEWMAC with the loss.
First-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) scored four times, senior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) added three goals and junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) contributed two goals and a season-high four assists to lead the Beavers. Senior Brooke Leveillee (Longmeadow, Mass.) led all players with four ground balls, sophomore Kayleigh Hacker (Natick, Mass.) recorded a game-high three caused turnovers and first-year Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) won a game-best eight draws in the win.
Sophomore Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) scored twice and senior Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.) collected six draw controls to lead the Lyons. Junior Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.) combined to make 10 saves in the loss.
Darveau, junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) and Novitch each scored once to stake the Green and White to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Jayne made it 4-1 at the 6:30 mark of the first to spark a four-goal run that included a pair of tallies by Novitch to stretch the margin to 7-1 at the end of the first.
LeBeau converted a free-position chance 62 seconds into the second quarter but Babson responded with a five-goal run that included three tallies and an assist by Kaskey to push the lead to 12-2 with 10:40 to go in the third quarter. Junior Erin Ortega (Merrimack, N.H.) got Wheaton back within nine with 8:00 to go in the stanza, but Darveau answered with consecutive goals that keyed an 8-0 to help the Beavers take their biggest lead of the game at 20-3 on Novitch's finally marker with 2:30 to go in the game.
Babson, which got four saves from first-year Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine), outshot the Lyons 39-11 and finished with a 19-10 in ground balls and a 16-11 edge in draw controls. The Beavers were also successful on 16-of-18 clearing opportunities.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson hosts Wellesley, while Wheaton travels to Mount Holyoke.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 27-16 all-time against Wheaton and have won seven consecutive games in the series dating back to 2017.
• Smith joins Kully Reardon, who won 112 games between 2002-11, as the only coaches in program history to reach the 100-win milestone.
• Wednesday's 16-goal margin of victory is the largest in program history against Wheaton, and the Beavers' 20 goals are their most against the Lyons since a 21-6 win back in 2007.
• In two career games against Wheaton, Jayne has produced six goals and seven assists for 13 points.
