Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Vassar in Home Opener, 15-5

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) scored five times and junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) finished with three goals and three assists to help Babson College defeat visiting Vassar College, 15-5, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the win, Babson improves to 2-0 on the year while Vassar slips to 1-2 overall.

Junior Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) recorded two goals and one assist, while classmate Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) contributed two goals, five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Beavers. Fellow junior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) finished with four draw controls, sophomore Kayleigh Hacker (Natick, Mass.) chipped in with three caused turnovers and first-year goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made 10 saves in the win.

Junior Kateri Sanseviro (Bayport, N.Y.) scored four times and classmate Trina Chou (Sunnyvale, Calif.) scooped up three ground balls and added three caused turnovers to lead the Brewers. Senior Ashley Roberts (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) added a goal and an assist, while sophomore Lauren Johns (Havertown, Pa.) stopped five shots in three-plus quarters of action between the pipes.

Jayne set up early tallies by Novitch and Sypniewski and sophomore Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) converted a feed from Sypniewski with 48 seconds left in the first quarter to help the Green and White build a 3-0 lead. Novitch notched her second goal of the day 6:22 into the second and senior Sophia McCann (Duxbury, Mass.) and Jayne followed with free-position scores less than 90 seconds apart to stretch the margin to 6-0 with 5:41 to go until halftime.

Sanseviro got Vassar on the board with 2:59 to go in the second and then followed up a tally by Jayne with two straight goals to pull the visitors within 9-4 with 8:38 to play in the third quarter. Dodge and Jayne responded with markers 42 seconds apart to push the lead back to 11-4 and the Beavers converted three free-position chances and scored four unanswered goals in the fourth to put the game away.

Dodge made it 12-5 with 12:26 to go and Novitch sandwich goals around a free-position strike by Kaskey to give Babson a 10-goal advantage with 4:34 to go in the contest.

The Beavers outshot Vassar 24-22 and converted 6-of-7 free-position chances in addition to finishing with a 21-13 edge in ground balls. The Brewers were just 2-of-5 on free-position shots and converted 14-of-16 clearing opportunities.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts No. 17 Wesleyan at 5 p.m., while Vassar travels to Manhattanville on March 15 at 4 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• Sunday's game was the first in program history for the Beavers against Vassar.
• Babson has now won 25 straight games when scoring at least 14 goals, a streak that extends back to 2018.
• The Beavers also have allowed fewer than 10 goals in each of their last 10 wins dating back to 2019.
• Babson has converted 71.4 percent (10-of-14) of its free-position chances over its first two games.
