No. 12 Wesleyan too strong for Women's Lacrosse, 18-5

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—No. 12 Wesleyan University scored nine unanswered goals in the second and third quarters Sunday afternoon on the way to an 18-5 victory over Babson College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at MacDowell Field.

The Cardinals posted their fourth win in a row to improve to 7-1 overall, while the Beavers drop to 3-4 on the season. The game was the completion of a contest that started back on March 9 before being suspended after five minutes of play due to snow on the field.

Junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) led the Beavers with a pair of goals along with team-highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers. First-year Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) scored her first two career goals, junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) scored once and first-year Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) recorded an assist. First-year Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) grabbed a team-high five draw controls in the setback.

Junior Kendall Mittleman (East Islip, N.Y.) posted a team-high six points for the Cardinals on two goals and four assists. Junior Olivia Lai (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and sophomore Laura Baine (Rye, N.Y.) tallied five points each, Lai with four goals and one assist and Baine with three goals and two assists. Junior Kate Balicki (Wayland, Mass.) finished with two goals and an assist and classmate Chessy Greenwald (Scarsdale, N.Y.) score twice to lead a group of 10 Cardinals who scored at least one goal. Graduate student Indigo Pellegrini de Paur (New Canaan, Conn.) collected a game-high seven draw controls in the win.

The afternoon started with a 3-1 score in favor of the visitors from the five minutes of action three weeks prior. Wesleyan scored the first three goals Sunday in the remainder of the first quarter to go ahead 6-1 after the opening frame.

After the Cardinals added another goal to start the second quarter, Dodge fired in a goal for Babson, adding that to the one she scored back on March 9. That ended up being the only Beaver goal of the quarter as Wesleyan tacked on five straight markers before the half and added four more in the third quarter to extend the margin to 16-2.

Evans provided a bright spot for the Beavers with a pair of goals on free-position shots, one late in the third and the other early in the fourth. Jayne scored Babson's final goal on an assist from Novitch, as Jayne kept her point-scoring streak alive at 16 games.

Wesleyan had a 31-10 advantage in shots and a small 15-12 margin in ground balls. The Beavers forced 14 Cardinal turnovers.

Babson is home again for its next two games at MacDowell Field, beginning Wednesday at 4 p.m. against non-conference foe Framingham State. Wesleyan faces Hamilton next Saturday at noon in a neutral site conference game in Middletown, Conn.
