Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) matched her career high with five goals, including the tying score with 30 seconds remaining in regulation and the game-winner 37 seconds into overtime as Babson College edged MIT, 17-16, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.
With the victory, Babson snaps a three-game skid and evens it record at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC, while MIT drops to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Jayne added an assist to equal her career-best with six points, while classmates Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) and Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) also reached career highs, Kaskey with six points on four goals and two assists and Sypniewski with four goals. Fellow junior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) chipped in with three goals, one assist, three draw controls and a career-high six caused turnovers and first-year Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) matched her season high with seven draw controls.
MIT had a balanced scoring attack as junior Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) and first-year Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) tallied three goals and two assists apiece, first-year Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded three goals and one assist, sophomore Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) scored three times, junior Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.) produced two goals and three assists, and junior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with two goals and one assist.
The Engineers came out strong, taking a 4-1 lead just five minutes into the game. The Beavers answered with four of the next five goals, including two each by Dodge and Jayne, to even the score at 5-5 after one quarter. MIT regained the lead with the first three goals of the second frame, but Babson stayed close with back-to-back goals by Sypniewski and Kaskey to cut the deficit to 8-7. The hosts came back with two more goals to close out the first half with a 10-7 advantage.
After the hosts tallied three of the first four goals on the third quarter to open up a 13-8 advantage, Babson came alive with six consecutive goals over a 10-minute span late in the third and early in the fourth stanza. Kaskey scored twice and sophomore Genevieve Bushey (Lakeville, Conn.) added one to close out the third, and Kaskey, Sypniewski and Jayne followed to put the Beavers in the lead, 14-13, with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth.
MIT came back with three in a row with pull back ahead, 16-14, with 2:50 remaining in regulation, but Babson would not go away. Dodge fired in a free-position shot with 1:19 left, and Jayne tied it at 16-all on a feed from Kaskey with 29.8 seconds on the clock to force the overtime. Connolly won the overtime draw to give Babson possession, and Kaskey found a wide-open Jayne near the left post and Jayne fired home the game-winner.
Babson had a 24-23 advantage in shots and 21-15 margin in draw controls, while MIT scooped up more ground balls by a 23-19 count. The Beavers were good on 14-of-16 clear attempts while holding the Engineers to 14-of-21 on their clear attempts. Babson first-year goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) and MIT senior Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) each finished with seven saves.
The Beavers are right back in action on Sunday, hosting No. 12 Wesleyan in a non-conference make-up game at MacDowell Field, beginning at 1 p.m. MIT also faces a nationally-ranked NESCAC school in its next game, hosting No. 10 Tufts on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

• Babson is now 35-5 all-time against MIT in a series that dates back to 1988.
• The Beavers' 17 goals is the most in a game since a 22-4 victory over Springfield in the 2021 NEWMAC championship game.
