Baseball Downed by Bowdoin, 11-4

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—First-years Matt Nakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) had three hits and Austin Zakow (Charlotte, N.C.) drove in four runs as Bowdoin College defeated Babson College, 11-4, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday at Lake Myrtle Park.

Babson, which has dropped three straight games, falls to 6-4, while Bowdoin improves to 4-5 on the year.

Sophomore Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Senior Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) was 2-for-5 with a triple and classmate Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) doubled and scored for the Beavers.

Senior Joe Gentile (Groton, Mass.) and junior Brandon Lopez (Amesbury, Mass.) both had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Polar Bears, who finished with six doubles and 12 hits in the win. Sophomore James Speer (Bridgeport, Conn.) picked up his first win of the year as three relievers limited the Green and White to just one run and two hits over the final 4.2 innings.

McHale tripled and scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, but Bowdoin responded with a four-run third inning. Gentile plated a pair of runs with a one-out double to right and Zakow drilled a two-out, two-run double to center to extend the margin to 5-1.

Sophomore Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) made it a three-run game with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but the Polar Bears scored three times in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore Connor Lee (Bedford, N.H.). The Beavers got one run back in the bottom of the frame when McHale doubled and scored on a wild pitch, but Bowdoin countered with three two-out runs in the sixth thanks to singles by Lopez and Zakow to push its advantage to 11-3.

First-year Alex Luka (Downers Grove, Ill.) made his first career start and gave up eight runs, just two of them earned, on six hits while striking out six in 4.2 innings for Babson. Sophomore Colby Lewis (Franklin, Mass.) earned a no-decision for the Polar Bears after allowing three runs on six hits over 4.1 innings for Bowdoin.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on No. 2/6 Wisconsin-Whitewater at 10 a.m. and Clarkson at 2:15 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park.
