Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Babson College senior Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) matched her career high with five goals, but Springfield College junior Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) scored 1:01 into overtime as the Pride defeated the Beavers, 10-9, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
Babson, which had its six-game winning streak snapped, falls to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while Springfield improves to 11-4 overall and 7-0 in the NEWMAC. The Pride also clinched at least a share of the regular season league title and the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Junior Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) had one goal and dished out four assists, while senior Emily Bresnahan (Wenham, Mass.) scored once and assisted on two other goals for the Beavers. Classmate Delaney Carroll (Acton, Mass.) led all players with three caused turnovers and junior Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) won four draw controls.
Corsano scored five times and junior Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added four goals, five ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers for Springfield.
The Green and White led throughout the first half and twice extended its advantage to two before settling for a 6-5 edge at the break. Giovanucci scored twice in just over six minutes to give the Beavers an 8-6 lead with 23:42 remaining before the Pride pulled even for the first time with 11:22 left after back-to-back free-position goals by Mahoney and Corsano.
Babson wasted little time going back in front as Giovanucci struck 28 seconds later to make it 9-8. Springfield senior goaltender Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) stopped a free-position attempt by O'Halloran with 8:37 to go and Corsano atoned for hitting the crossbar with less than seven minutes left by burying a free-position chance to pull even with 2:16 remaining.
Neither team attempted a shot over the final two minutes of regulation and there was just one possession in overtime as Mahoney won the draw control to set up Corsano's goal 61 seconds into the extra stanza.
First-year Olivia Phelan (Wilton, Conn.) stopped three shots for the Beavers, while Anderson made seven of her 11 saves in the second half for the Pride.
The Green and White was nearly perfect on clears (15-for-16) and held a 26-16 edge in shots. Springfield had a slim 14-12 advantage in ground balls and both teams won nine draws.
Both squads wrap up the regular season on Wednesday as Babson hosts MIT at 7 p.m., while Springfield takes on Emerson at 6 p.m.
