Wheaton Sweeps Baseball in NEWMAC Championship Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTON, Mass.—The fourth-seeded Babson College baseball team saw its season come to an end with a pair of losses to third-seeded Wheaton College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Series. The Beavers dropped the opener, 1-0, and were defeated 5-1 by the Lyons in game two.

Babson, which was making its first conference finals appearance since 2012, ends the season at 24-16-1. Wheaton (30-11) captured its first NEWMAC title since 2013 and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) recorded his third straight quality start and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three and walking four over seven innings in game one for Babson. Sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) and first-year Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) both finished with two hits for the Green and White, which put its leadoff hitter on base in four of the first five innings.

Webber started the top of the second with a double, junior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) waslked to leadoff the third and classmate Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.) singled to begin the fifth. Unfortunately, the Beavers stranded five runners over the first five innings and had two others caught stealing as the game remained deadlocked.

Carey allowed just one hit over the first four innings before running into trouble with two outs in the fifth. Lyons' sophomore Ryan McKeon (Johnston, R.I.) singled through the left side and advanced to third on senior Jimmy Smith's (Worcester, Mass.) double before racing home with the game's only run on a wild pitch. Gill singled with one out in the eighth and Webber reached with an one-out base hit in the ninth, but neither was able to get into scoring position.

Junior Michael Bruemmel (Bridgewater, Mass.) moved to 3-4 on the year after scattering six hits and striking out two over eight shutout innings. Senior Eric Dumas (Brookline, Mass.) worked the ninth inning to pick up his league-leading 13th save of the year for Wheaton.

Babson first-year Daniel Cooney (Verona, N.J.) worked out of a jam in the first inning of game two before the Lyons struck for a pair of runs in the second. McKeon played junior Justin Sellar (Middletown, R.I.) with a sacrifice fly and Smith followed with a two-out single to drive in junior Joey Santigate (Staten Island, N.Y.) for a 2-0 advantage.

The Green and White stranded runners on the corners in the fourth, and then saw Wheaton push its lead to 3-0 on senior Justin Silvestro's (Waltham, Mass.) sacrifice fly in the last of the fifth. The Beavers got on the board in the sixth junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) followed back-to-back singles by Gill and sophomore Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

The Lyons tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run single by senior Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass.). Sophomore Brady Furdon (Natick, Mass.) moved to 5-1 on the year after giving up just one run on six hits over seven innings, while senior Michael Baryski (Walpole, Mass.) came on to get the final six outs for the hosts.

Gill went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Beavers. Cooney (4-4) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings, while senior Nick Ahearn (Norfolk, Mass.) gave up two runs in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.
