Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass.—Junior Kevin Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) finished the day with four hits as visiting Babson College dropped both games of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Wheaton College at Sidell Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers fell 3-1 in the opener and then suffered an 11-3 setback to the Lyons in game two.
Babson, which has lost three straight, is now 11-7-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Wheaton moves to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in the NEWMAC.
Murphy went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) was 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Beavers in game one. First-year Michael Genaro (Greenwich, Conn.) suffered the loss despite allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out three in a complete-game effort.
After turning a double play in the top of the first, the Lyons scored a pair of two-out runs on back-to-back singles by senior Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass.) and first-year Tyler Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.) in the bottom of the frame. Silvestro extended the Wheaton lead to 3-0 in the third when he drove in senior Jimmy Smith (Worcester, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly.
The Green and White got on the board in the fourth when Murphy smacked a one-out double to center and raced home on Halpin's single to right field one batter later. Genaro did his best to keep the visitors in the game, allowing just one hit over his final five innings, but Babson had just one runner advance past first base after scoring in the fourth.
Sophomore Brady Furdon (Natick, Mass.) moved to 3-1 on the year after giving up just one run on five hits over 7.2 innings. Senior Eric Dumas (Brookline, Mass.) worked a perfect ninth to record his ninth save of the year for the Lyons.
After a pair of low-scoring games to open the series, Wheaton broke game two open with eight runs, all with two outs, over the first two innings. Junior Zach Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass.) and senior Mike Beneduce (North Kingstown, R.I.) used back-to-back doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the first. Classmate Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass.) smacked a two-run double to right center in the second, and Goodwin-Boyd followed with a two-run triple, and then scored on a wild pitch to cap a five-run rally.
Trailing 10-0 in the sixth, Murphy plated sophomore Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) with a single up the middle to get the Beavers on the board. Ayala scored again in the eighth on sophomore Zeke Zabinski's (Blue Bell, Pa.) ground out, and first-year Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) doubled to score junior Mark Poli (Medfield, Mass.) in the top of the ninth.
Murphy went 3-for-4 for Babson, which used five pitchers in the game. Junior Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) lasted just two innings after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks over the first two innings.
Sophomore Dan Southerland (Dartmouth, Mass.) worked six innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out eight to move to 4-1 on the year for the Lyons.
The Beavers return to action on Sunday when they host WPI in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Govoni Field. Wheaton will host Fitchburg State on Monday at 4 p.m.
