Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) allowed just one hit over 7.2 innings and junior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to help fourth-seeded Babson College defeat the fifth-seeded Coast Guard Academy, 9-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball tournament quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its sixth win in the last seven games, Babson is now 22-13-1 overall and advances to this weekend's best-of-three semifinal series at top-seeded MIT. Coast Guard sees its season come to a close at 16-21.
Junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while sophomore Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and first-year Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) both finished with two hits to go along with an RBI for the Beavers. Senior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) contributed a pair of hits and scored twice, and sophomore David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) scored a pair of runs.
Junior Kyle Jackson (Lincoln. R.I.) and first-year Will Stephens (Raleigh, N.C.) each finished with a hit for the Bears.
The Green and White stranded a pair of runners in the first and Coast Guard took the lead thanks to four Babson miscues in the top of the third. Senior Mark Behne (Clifton, Va.) and classmate Cory Sonnega (Shoreline, Wash.) reached on back-to-back errors to start the frame, and then took advantage of an error at the plate and a failed pick off to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers cut their deficit in half in the last of the third when Weiss scored on Halpin's sacrifice fly, and then erupted for four runs in the sixth. Halpin led off with a single and sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) followed with a double to put runners on the corners. Crowley was hit by a pitch to lead the bases before first-year Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) delivered Halpin with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Lennon gave the Green and White the lead with his RBI single one batter later, and Weiss came through with the big blow, a two-run triple to left center, to make it 5-2. Babson added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Lehr and Crowley scored on an error, while Gill and Ayala each drove in a run to extend the lead to 9-2.
Carey (3-2) was superb on the hill for the Beavers, working around the early errors to hold the Bears to just one hit while striking out eight and walking only one to win for the third time in his last four starts. Junior Graham Stack (Arlington, Mass.) recorded the final out of the eighth inning and sophomore Matt Cuneo (Ashland, Mass.) worked around a one-out single by Stephens in the ninth to close out the victory.
Junior Eric Vrissis (Stamford, Conn.) suffered the loss for Coast Guard after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings.
Game one in Babson's best-of-three series at MIT is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday in Cambridge, with game two scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
