Box Score BOSTON, Mass.—Junior Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in two runs, while classmate Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) scored twice as UMass Boston defeated Babson College, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action at Monan Park on Thursday afternoon.
With the loss, Babson is now 14-9-1 on the year, while UMass-Boston moves to 13-11 overall.
Sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) led the Green and White at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run score. Classmate Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) also tripled and scored as the Beavers finished with at least one extra-base hit for the 11th straight game.
Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) and Kyle Boudrias (Hyde Park, Mass.) each added two runs batted in for the Beacons, while Ryan Olivo (Rochester, N.Y.) hit went 4-for-5 as part of a 16-hit attack.
In the first at-bat of the day, Ayala tripled down the right field line. Junior Kevin Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) drove him in with a groundout to shortstop one batter later to put Babson in front 1-0. The lead was short lived, however, as the Beacons loaded the bases on three straight singles in the bottom of the first. With the bases flush, Searles hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Mantoni.
UMass Boston struck again after Beavers' junior Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) walked sophomore Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) to begin the third inning. Danielson advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt, and was able to score after Murphy single down the left field line. Two batters later, Searles drove Murphy home to take a 3-1 lead.
Rotunno (2-3) surrendered two more runs in the fifth as Murphy and Olivo came through with back-to-back two-out singles to extend the Beacons advantage to 5-1. He retired the side in order in the fifth before being relieved by first-year Max Tannenbaum (Coral Springs, Fla.), who recorded two strikeouts in two shutout relief innings. Junior John Russolillo (Georgetown, Mass.) finished the game giving up two earned runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Webber tripled to right field and scored on first-year Eric Jaun's (Loveland, Ohio) single up the middle to close the gap to 7-2.
Sophomore Bryan Kaufman (Farmingdale, N.Y.), one of seven pitchers used by the Beacons, tossed two perfect innings of relief to earn the win and move to 2-3 on the year.
Babson will take on MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in Cambridge on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before completing the three-game series at Govoni Field Saturday at 12 and 3 p.m.
