Jaun Helps Baseball Rally Past Clark, 5-2

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to help Babson College edge visiting Clark University, 5-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With the win, Babson is now 14-8-1 overall and 5-4 in league play, while Clark drops to 12-17 overall and 2-7 in the NEWMAC.

Senior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in two as part of a three-run eighth inning for the Beavers. Sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) scored twice and first-year Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) added a double in the win.

Graduate student David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) went 3-for-4, while junior Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Cougars.

Clark jumped ahead 1-0 on senior James Conway's (Newburyport, Mass.) single through the left side in the top of the first, and doubled its advantage when junior Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) raced home on Hutchinson's infield single in the second. Graduate student Taylor Serrano (Essex, Conn.) gave up just two hits over the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth.

Babson first-year Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) led off with a single, and Webber drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch to put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs. Jaun followed with a double down the left field line to pull the Green and White even at 2-2 while chasing Serrano from the game.

Beavers' senior Nick Ahearn (Norfolk, Mass.) worked around Hutchinson's one-out double in the seventh, and junior Graham Stack (Arlington, Mass.) got a double play to end the top of the eighth before the offense struck for three more two-out runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled through the right side and came in with the go-ahead run on Jaun's second double of the day two batters later. Crowley then followed with a two-run single to right field, and sophomore Matt Cuneo (Ashland, Mass.) came on to close the door in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to earn his fifth save of the year.

Stack (1-0) earned the win for the Green and White after Ahearn held the Cougars to just two runs while striking out five over seven innings. Serrano finished with a no-decision in 5.2 innings of work, while sophomore Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) dropped to 2-2 on the year after giving up three runs, two of them earned, with one strikeout in an inning of work for Clark.

Both teams return to action on Thursday as Babson visits UMass Boston at 3 p.m., while the Cougars host Wheaton at 3:30 p.m.
