Baseball Settles For 5-5 Tie Due To Rain Against Kalamazoo

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Sophomore Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and classmate Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) allowed just one earned run over six innings, but the Babson College baseball team was unable to hang onto a four-run lead and was forced to settle for a 5-5 tie with Kalamazoo College when the game was called after nine innings due to heavy rain.

The Beavers wrapped up their nine-game trip to Florida with a record of 5-3-1, while Kalamazoo is now 3-2-1 on the year.

Friday-year Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished with two hits and a run scored for Babson. Senior Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) added a double and an RBI as he was one of eight players to get at least one hit.

The Green and White broke a scoreless deadlock on junior Kevin Murphy's (Pembroke, Mass.) two-out RBI single in the top of the third. The Beavers then extended their lead to 4-0 with a three-run fourth. Halpin led off with a single and scored on an error, Barry's two-out double plated sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) and Ayala followed with a single down the right field line to bring home Barry.

Jaun made it 5-0 an inning later with a two-out single through the left side to score junior Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.). The Hornets, who were held without a hit by Carey over the first four innings, got on the scoreboard with two outs in the last of the fifth on a single to right field by sophomore Josh Reuter (Howell, Mich.). Carey worked around a one-out walk in the sixth and sophomore John Floegel (Summit, N.J.) retired the side in order in the seventh.

Kalamazoo put runners on the eighth with a single and error, and got a two-out, two-run double from junior Jack Clark (Ann Arbor, Mich.) to get within 5-3. Connor Grant produced an RBI single through the left side one batter later, but junior John Russolillo (Georgetown, Mass.) came on in relief of Floegel and got an inning-ending fly out to center to escape further danger.

The Hornets put together another rally in the ninth as they loaded the bases with a hit batsman, and error and a bunt single against Babson junior Grant Stack (Arlington, Mass.). junior Nate Donovan (Trenton, Mich.) raced home on a passed ball to tie the game at 5-5, but Stack recorded three straight outs to escape further damage.

Carey gave up just two hits while striking out four and walking six in six innings for the Beavers, while Floegel was tagged for three unearned runs in 1.2 innings. Russolillo walked one in 0.1 innings and Stack struck out one and allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

Babson returns home to take on Plymouth State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Govoni Field.
