Box Score AUBURNDALE, Mass.—Junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and the Babson College bullpen allowed just one hit over the final four innings en route to a 6-4 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
Babson, which snapped a two-game skid, is now 3-3 on the year, while Rensselaer drops to 1-10.
First-year Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and first-year Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) finished with a pair of hits. Junior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) also doubled as part of the Beavers' 14-hit attack to reach base safely for the 22nd straight game.
Junior Jason Ramos (Brooklyn, N.Y.) homered and classmate Yahriel Jimenez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) went 1-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Engineers.
RPI took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Ethann Meister (Santa Teresa, N.M.) in the top of the first, but Babson answered in the bottom of the frame when Gill walked and later scored on an RBI ground out by senior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.). The Green and White took its first lead of the game in the third, stringing together four hits to plate a trio of runs. Gill and Halpin started the frame with back-to-back singles, and first-year Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) loaded the bases with a base knock to left. First-year Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) drove in Gill and Halpin with another single and Lehr came around to score on a wild pitch two batters later to give the Beavers a 4-1 advantage.
First-year starter Kyle Waldron (Cheshire, Conn.) cruised through the first four innings, but gave up a two-out, two-run single to Jimenez in the fifth. The Engineers then tied the game at 4-4 on Ramos' solo homer to lead off the sixth. Babson wasted little time regaining the lead though, as Weiss doubled to begin the bottom of the frame and then scored two batters later on Halpin's single down the right field line. The Green and White tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on Webber's first career homer to begin the inning.
First-year Daniel Cooney (Verona, N.J.), who came on in relief of Waldron in the sixth, earned the victory with two solid innings out of the bullpen and is now 2-0 on the year. Waldron allowed four earned runs on five hits while striking out three in 5.0 innings.
Junior Graham Stack (Arlington, Mass.) worked a perfect eighth inning before turning the ball over to sophomore Matt Cuneo (Ashland, Mass.), who worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.
Senior Stephen Schiavone (White Plains, N.Y.) suffered the loss for the Engineers after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it takes on Gallaudet at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla., at 11:30 a.m.
