TCNJ Downs Baseball, 10-1

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Senior John Rizzi (Long Hill, N.J.) doubled and homered, and sophomore Joe Cirillo (Fairfield, N.J.) allowed just one run on six hits as The College of New Jersey defeated Babson College, 10-1, in non-conference baseball action at Lake Myrtle Park on Monday afternoon.

With the loss, Babson is now 2-3 on the year, while TCNJ moves to 5-1 overall.

Sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI double, while first-year Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) extended his hitting streak to four games with a double for the Beavers. Junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the loss.

Junior Ben Varone (Marlton, N.J.) went 3-for-4, while Rizzi, sophomore Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, N.J.) and senior Garen Turner (Hainesport, N.J.) all drove in two runs apiece for the Lions. Cirillo struck out eight and walked none to move to 3-0 on the year.

Rizzi homered to lead off the bottom of the first, but the Green and White tied the game with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Halpin singled to center and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Webber smacked an RBI double to left center to make it 1-1.

Babson sophomore Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) had scattered three hits over the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom half of the fourth. TCNJ recorded five hits, including three straight singles with one out on its way to building a 4-1 advantage. Rotunno worked around a two-out error in the fifth, but the Lions used four hits, a walk and a hit batsman to break the game open with four more runs in the sixth.

Cirillo allowed just two hits while retiring 14 of the final 16 batters he faced for TCNJ.

Rotunno (0-1) tossed 5.1 innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits in his season debut. First-year Nicholas Parente (Lincoln University, Pa.) made his collegiate debut, giving up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings, while classmate Max Tannenbaum (Coral Springs, Fla.) struck out two and recorded a scoreless eighth inning in his first career appearance.

Following a day off, Babson will take on Rensselaer at Lake Myrtle Park on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
