Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) tripled twice, scored three times and drove in five runs to help Babson College split a doubleheader against 21st-ranked Concordia University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. Following a 6-4 loss in game one, the Beavers responded with a 12-5 victory against the Cougars in game two.
First-year Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while senior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) had a pair of hits in the opener for Babson (2-1).
The Beavers jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the third inning as Gill singled home junior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.), and later scored on a groundout by first-year Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.). Concordia (8-3) came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Green and White loaded the bases with no outs and pushed the tying run across when Weiss grounded into a double play in the top of the fourth.
The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, and then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to make it 6-3 after Babson was unable to take advantage of a leadoff double by Halpin and a single by Crowley.
Senior Nick Ahearn (Norfolk, Mass.) gave up five earned runs on 12 hits over five innings and took the loss for the Beavers.
The Green and White got a double play to get out of the top of the first in game two, and then exploded for five runs to grab an early lead in the nightcap. Junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) plated sophomore Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) with an RBI groundout, and first-year Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) followed with a two-run single.
Concordia scored three times in the second and added another run in the third to pull within 5-4, but Webber drove in Jaun and sophomore Zeke Zabinski (Blue Bell, Pa.) with a triple, and then later scored on senior Joe Barry's (Stoneham, Mass.) groundout to push the lead back to 8-4 after three. Webber came through with another two-run triple in the fourth, while Barry and Weiss followed with RBI singles as the Green and White extended its lead to 12-4 in the fourth.
The support was more than enough for first-year Daniel Cooney (Verona, N.J.), who gave up two earned runs and scattered seven hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings to earn a win in his first collegiate start. Ayala, Jaun, Zabinski and Webber all finished with two hits for the Beavers.
Babson returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Bates at 9 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park.
