Beavers Tie Team Record With Seven Doubles As Part of 13-Hit Attack

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—Junior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) and first-year Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) both tied a school record with three doubles apiece, and combined to drive in four runs to help Babson College open its season with a 12-8 victory over Medaille College at Chain of Lakes Park.

Weiss scored three times, while junior Kevin Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) both had two hits and combined to drive in three runs as part of the Beavers' 13-hit attack. Senior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with three walks, junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled and walked twice, and first-year Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

Junior Kris Kruszka (Gowanda, N.Y.) hit an eighth-inning grand slam and drove in five runs to lead Medaille.

Trailing 2-1 after two, Babson got RBI singles from Murphy and Webber as part of a three-run third inning. The Mavericks scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to get back within 5-4, but the Beavers exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to break the game open. McHale plated sophomore David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) with a one-out single, Weiss drove in a pair of runs with his double two batters later, and Halpin followed with another two-run double to extended the lead to 10-4.

Gill pushed the Babson lead to 11-4 with an RBI double in the sixth and Webber added another insurance run in the seventh with a two-out single to bring home first-year Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio). The Green and White took advantage of 10 walks and three Medaille errors in the win.

First-year Kyle Waldron (Cheshire, Conn.) earned his first collegiate victory for the Beavers with 3.2 innings of shutout relief after coming on for sophomore John Floegel (Summit, N.J.) in the fourth.

Sophomore Ryan Wojcinski (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) suffered the loss allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits and six walks in 4.1 innings of work for the Mavericks.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Concordia-Chicago in a doubleheader starting at 12:45 p.m. in Auburndale, Fla.
