Women's Lacrosse Falls To No. 19 Springfield, 14-7

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Junior Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) scored four times and senior Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.) added three goals and one assist as 19th-ranked Springfield College defeated visiting Babson College, 14-7, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action at Stagg Field.

With its ninth straight victory, Springfield (13-2, 7-0 NEWMAC) clinched the league's regular season title. Babson, which had won two consecutive games, drops to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

First-year Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) had two goals and one assist, while Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and graduate student Kerstin Lindrooth (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) each scored twice for the Pride. Raniolo finished with a team-high five draw controls, and fellow junior Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown, N.Y.) collected three ground balls and led all players with three caused turnovers.

Senior Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) scored three times and junior McKenzie Tucci (Winchester, Mass.) added a pair of goals for the Beavers. Sophomore Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) led all players with six ground balls and was one of four players with two caused turnovers, while first-year Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) finished with a game-high five draw controls.

Krull scored a pair of early goals as Springfield went in front 5-0 on a tally by Corsano with 12:28 remaining in the first half.  Babson sophomore Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) converted a feed from junior Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 5-1 at the 8:53 mark of the opening stanza. Lindrooth and Corsano sandwiched goals around a free-position strike from Secrist to give the Pride a 7-2 lead at the break.

Secrist scored again to open the second half to get within four, but Springfield responded with a three-goal spurt to push its lead to 10-3 with 20:35 to go in the contest. Farina buried a free-position shot at the 18:18 mark to cut the Beavers to six, but Dorsey scored 57 seconds later to make it 11-4.

The teams traded goals over the final 15 minutes, and Pride goalkeeper sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) made five of her six second-half saves in the final 10 minutes to snap its three-game losing streak against Babson.

Beavers' sophomore goalkeeper Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished with seven saves, while Anderson stopped nine shots for the game.

Both teams finished with 24 shots and both teams won 12 draw controls. The Green and White went 16-for-24 on clear opportunities and committed a season-high 24 turnovers in the loss.

Springfield held a slim 25-23 edge in ground balls and were successful on 17-of-20 clears.

Both teams wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts MIT, while Springfield takes on Emerson.
