Beatty, Mulligan Guide Babson To 15-12 Victory Over Springfield

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Misha Beatty (Westwood, Mass.) scored six goals and senior Colleen Mulligan (Hanover, Mass.) and junior Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) each added four others as the Babson College women's lacrosse team claimed a 15-12 victory over visiting Springfield College in a key matchup of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals at MacDowell Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Beavers improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Pride fell to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.

Along with her six goals, Beatty added one assist for a game-high seven points. Mulligan and Spang each contributed four goals for Babson, and senior captain Trisha Babson (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with one goal and four assists for five points while also collecting eight draw controls. Defensively, the Beavers were paced by senior Taylor Wailes (Andover, Mass.), who picked up three groundballs, senior captain Erin Daley (Darien, Conn.), who forced two turnovers, and sophomore goalie Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y.), who finished with five saves in net.

Springfield was led by sophomore Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.), who tallied three goals and two assists for five points, and first-year Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.), who added three goals and a game-high three caused turnovers. Senior captain Jackie Moscardelli (Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Allie Davis (Fairfield, Conn.) each contributed two goals and one assist, junior Meghan Flanagan (Averill Park, N.Y.) also scored twice, and first-year Ellie Getchell (Franklin, Mass.) picked up a game-high four groundballs. Sophomore goalie Anne Versprille (Franklin, Mass.) went the distance in net for the Pride, making a total of six saves.
Babson took control early in the first half, as Mulligan and Spang each scored twice during a 4-1 run to open the contest. Springfield cut the deficit to one on back-to-back tallies from Flanagan and Gallo, but Beatty rattled off consecutive goals on spectacular individual moves around the cage to push the Beavers' advantage back to three, 6-3, with 6:25 to go in the half.

The Pride came storming back over the remainder of the period, beginning when Davis tucked an unassisted goal into the lower left corner at 6:02. Moscardelli then found Dorsey wide open in front of the net for a goal at the five-minute mark before scoring a goal of her own off a Gallo feed with 10.5 seconds left in the half, knotting the contest at 6-6.

The Pride carried their momentum into the early moments of the second half, as Gallo scored to give her team its only lead of the day, 7-6, at 26:21. However, Babson answered with a decisive 9-2 run over a 16-minute stretch from 19:26 to 3:59, turning the one-goal deficit into a 15-9 advantage. Beatty scored three of Babson's first four tallies to open the run, while Mulligan and Spang combined for four of the Beavers' final five strikes.

Springfield would battle back with goals from Gallo, Moscardelli, and Dorsey in the final three and a half minutes, but it would not be enough as Babson held on for the 15-12 victory.

The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Connecticut College for a 4:30 p.m. matchup. Babson will be off until Thursday, when they host Western New England University, also at 4:30 p.m.
