SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Meghan Dobson scored the tying goal with
3:37 left in regulation and then netted the game-winner 55 seconds
into the third overtime to lead the Springfield College Pride to a
14-13 victory over visiting Babson College in a New England Women's
and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse matchup on
Saturday afternoon.
The loss was Babson's first against a NEWMAC opponent since
April 29, 2006, when the Beavers fell to Springfield in the
conference tournament semifinals. Since that time, Babson had won
32 consecutive league contests leading into Saturday's contest. The
Beavers' record now stands at 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the
NEWMAC.
Springfield (6-2 overall, 2-0 NEWMAC) received four goals and
four assists from Dobson, as well as three goals and one helper
from Jackie Moscardelli. Brittany LeGuela chipped in with three
goals, Nicole Soucie added two goals and one assist, and goalie
Anne Versprille finished with four saves in net.
Babson was led by senior Alyssa Hood and junior
Colleen Mulligan, who each recorded five goals.
Sophomore Jamie Spang added one goal and one
assist, junior Trisha Babson tallied two assists,
and senior goalie Sarah Macary totaled seven saves
in net.
The Pride took an early 3-1 lead after Mocsardelli scored with
21:51 left in the first half, and they still led by the same margin
after a Meghan Flanagan goal made it 5-2 at 14:45. Babson then
erupted for seven consecutive goals, including three by Hood, to
take a 9-5 lead with just over two minutes left in the half.
Springfield would receive the final goal of the period from Kelly
Gallo with 58 seconds left as the Beavers took a 9-6 lead into the
break.
Springfield slowly chipped away at the Babson lead in the second
half, getting to within one on three occasions before Dobson
finally evened the score at 13-13 with 3:37 left in regulation. The
two teams then failed to score in the first overtime session, with
each squad's only shot going wide.
Babson nearly won the game at the end of the second overtime
session, but Spang's shot hit the crossbar with three seconds left.
Macary then saved the Pride's first shot of the third OT, but
Flanagan caused a turnover with 2:31 left, and 26 seconds later
Dobson netted the game-winner with 2:05 on the clock.
