BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College junior Alyssa
Hood (Newport, R.I.) scored four goals and senior captain
Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored three
goals and added two assists in a 10-7 victory over visiting
Springfield College in a New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse contest on
Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field. With the win, Babson
improves to 9-3 on the season and remains undefeated in the NEWMAC
at 3-0. Springfield drops to 6-3 with the loss and are now 2-1 in
the NEWMAC.
Babson sophomore Erin Daley (Darien, Conn.)
started the scoring off early with an unassisted goal just 32
second in. The game remained 1-0 in favor of Babson for the next
ten minutes until Pettengill scored her first goal of the day at
19:28 to give Babson the 2-0 lead. Springfield College senior Jen
Zubkus (Dover, N.H.) put the Pride on the board with a free
position goal at the 13:50 mark and teammate junior Nicole Soucie
(Southington, Conn.) scored off a Zubkus assist just two minutes
later to tie the game 2-2. Babson first-year Jamie Spang
(Kennebunk, Maine) scored the final goal of the half at
6:01 remaining off a free position shot to give Babson the 3-2 lead
entering the break.
Zubkus tied the game again, 3-3, when she scored a free position
goal to start the second half at the 27:28 mark. Babson then
scored six of the next seven goals to give them their biggest lead
of the game, 9-4, with 7:12 remaining in the contest. Hood scored
all four of her goals during this run. Springfield tried to
close the gap with back-to-back goals at 3:40 and 3:01 to close the
lead to three, 9-6. The two teams then traded goals once more
resulting in the 10-7 victory for Babson.
Hood finished with four goals and one assist for five total points.
Pettengill also finished with five points scoring three goals and
adding two assists. Spang, Daley, and senior captain Anna
Collins (Winchester, Mass.) each finished with one goal in
the win. Defensively, Babson was led by Pettengill who tallied
three caused turnovers and three groundballs. Junior Ellen
McCurdy (Weston, Mass.) also had a strong defensive
showing picking up four groundballs.
The Pride were led by Soucie who scored three goals. Zubkus
followed with two goals and one assist and sophomore Jackie
Moscardelli (Weymouth, Mass) and first-year Meghan Flanagan
(Averill Park, N.Y.) each finished with one goal. Zubkus also had a
game high four draw controls .
Babson junior goalkeeper Sarah Macary (Woodbury,
Conn.) played all 60 minutes making seven total saves.
Senior Lauren McAulay (Yorktown, N.Y.) also went the distance in
net for the Pride making 11 saves.
The Beavers return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they visit
Wellesley College for a 4:30pm NEWMAC contest. Springfield will
next host Mount Holyoke College in a 7pm NEWMAC matchup also on
Tuesday.
