Box Score

BOX SCORE

MANSFIELD,  Conn.  -  The first seven batters of the fourth  inning collected hits - with Ethan Guerette  (Wales, ME) clearing the bass with a single in the gap - as the seventh-seeded Husson College baseball team remained alive in the 2009 NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament with a 10-6 win over  eighth-seeded Babson College Friday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium. The loss eliminates Babson (23-29) and sends Husson (33-13) against  either second-seeded University of Southern Maine or top-seeded Eastern Connecticut Saturday at 11 a.m. The USM-Eastern winner faces Husson and the loser becomes the fourth team to be eliminated in the original field of eight.

Babson, which opened the tournament with a 10-6 conquest of Eastern, scored four times in the first and two in the ninth, but was quiet throughout the middle seven innings. In the first inning, the Beavers had three of their four hits against Husson starter Chris Pease (Hampden, ME) , who also walked three and hit a batter.

Husson banged out 17 hits - 14 of them singles -- against three Babson pitchers. Trailiing 4-0, Husson got one back in the third on two hits and an infield throwing error and chases Babson starter Matt Barton (Washingtonville, NY) in the fourth. Barton (4-2) faced seven batters in the fourth but did not record an out. Guerette drove in three runs with his bases-loaded single, No. 9 hitter Cody Haverly-Johndro (Newport, ME) plated one with a single, No. 3 hitter Chris Maguire (Bucksport, ME) drove in one with a double, and the final run scored on  the first out of the inning - an infield ground ball by Jeff Miller (Veazie, ME).

Pease  (6-2) pitched the first seven innings, walking seven and giving up four hits while fanning four.

Guerette, who did not play in his team's 10-3 victory over Westfield State Thursday, was 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored, while Corey Cushing (Brewer, ME) reached safely four times with a walk and three hits and scored two runs.
