BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College baseball team nearly
overcame a five-run deficit with a late rally against visiting
Williams College on Sunday, but the Beavers' comeback bid fell just
short as the Ephs held on for 9-8 win at Babson's Govoni Field.
With the loss, the Beavers slipped to 11-10 overall, while
Williams improved to 10-5.
First-year Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.)
once again powered the Babson offense, going 3-for-5 with a pair of
home runs - his team-leading fourth and fifth of the season - to go
with two runs scored and four RBIs. Junior Jake Bartlett
(Weymouth, Mass.) also had a good day, going 2-for-3 with
one run and one driven in, while sophomore Billy Besinger
(Milton, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with a double, a run, and two
RBIs.
First-year Jeff Burress (Cumberland, R.I.)
started and took the loss for Babson, dropping his season mark to
1-2. Fellow rookie Trevor MacNeill (Hanover,
Mass.) held the Ephs to just one run on two hits and three
walks while striking out four in 2 1/3 innings of relief, and
senior Matt Barton (Washingtonville, N.Y.) got the
final four outs without allowing a run.
Senior starter Ben Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.) picked up the win
for Williams, going six innings and allowing three runs on four
hits, walking six and striking out two. The victory improved his
record to 4-2 on the year. The two relievers who followed were
roughed up by the Beavers, but Senior Zach Stone (Darien, Conn.)
came on to get the final five outs to earn his first save.
After jumping out to an early 6-3 lead in the first two innings,
the Ephs tacked on two more in the sixth to go up 8-3. Babson then
came storming back with three in the bottom of the seventh,
including two on Jonasson's second home run of the ballgame and
another on an RBI single by Bartlett to make it 8-6.
Williams plated a key insurance run in the top of the eighth to
make it 9-6 before the Beavers scored two more in the bottom of the
inning. Besinger knocked in the first with an RBI double to deep
center, and an error on the relay throw allowed junior
Peter O'Toole (Salem, Mass.) to scamper home from
third to pull Babson to within one. However, Stone came on to get
two huge strikeouts in the eighth and a game-ending double play in
the ninth to clinch the 9-8 Williams victory.
