WORCESTER, Mass. - The Babson College baseball team used six
runs on four hits to overcome a 5-2 deficit in the seventh inning
and post an 8-6 victory over Clark University in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Granger
Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers
improved to 14-13 overall and 5-6 in league play. Clark fell
to 10-18 (2-7 NEWMAC).
Babson struck first with an unearned run in the second
inning. Junior Jake Bartlett (Weymouth,
Mass.) singled to left field, stole second, and later
scored on an infield throwing error for a 1-0 lead. First-year
Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.) then knocked in the
Beavers' second run on a sacrifice fly to center in the third
inning for a two-run advantage.
After Clark tied it up (2-2) on sophomore Kevin Kopec's
(Katonah, N.Y.) two-run dinger - his second of the year - in the
fourth, sophomore Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) ignited a
five-run rally with a two-out single up the middle to make it 4-2
in the fifth. Hollingsworth then advanced to second on a wild
pitch and came around to score on first-year Mitch DeLorenzo's
(Berlin, Conn.) double down the left field line to give the Cougars
a 5-2 lead.
The Beavers came right back with a huge six-run rally in the
seventh to regain the lead for good. Junior Peter
O'Toole (Salem, Mass.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly,
while senior Bryan Evans (Bellaire, Texas) and
first-year Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass.)
each had two-run singles in the frame. The sixth run was the
result of a Clark error.
Clark threatened in the ninth, as juniors Steve DeMartino (East
Haven, Conn.) and Phil DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) recorded
consecutive singles to put runners at first and second. In an
attempt to turn a double-play on the next batter's infield hit, the
Beavers committed a throwing error that allowed DeMartino to score
from second base.
With two down, DeLorenzo was hit by a pitch to put the go-ahead
run at the plate. However, senior Matt Barton
(Washingtonville, N.Y.) eluded the threat with a fly out
to end the game and secure his first save of the season.
Babson starter Andrew Aizenstadt (Norwell,
Mass.) allowed seven hits and two walks, while striking
out nine to earn the win. Evans led the offense with three
hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
Hollingsworth paced Clark with two hits and two RBI. DeLorenzo
and sophomore Andrew Agostini (Williamstown, Mass.) also added a
pair of hits.
Junior Brendan Solecki (Portsmouth, R.I.), the second of four
Clark pitchers, took the loss. Junior Jon Merritt (East
Bridgewater, Mass.) gave up five hits and five runs (three earned)
and fanned five batters as the starter.
Clark will host Daniel Webster College on Thursday (3:30 p.m.).
Babson will entertain UMass-Boston on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).
