BABSON PARK, Mass. - Keene State College received a fantastic
pitching performance from sophomore righthander Corey Vogt
(Suffield, Conn.) as the Owls defeated Babson College, 4-1, in a
non-conference baseball matchup at Babson's Govoni Field on
Thursday afternoon. Playing as the home team in the contest, Keene
State improved to 8-6 on the year, while the Beavers fell to 9-5.
Keene State staked Vogt to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the
first, beginning with a leadoff homer by senior captain Jeff
Perkins (Dunbarton, N.H.) - his first of the year. Junior captain
Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.) later singled and scored on an
RBI-double to center by sophomore Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) to make
it 2-0, and senior captain Beau Darak (Londonderry, N.H.) knocked
in the Owls' third run when his single to left plated Doyon.
The Owls added another run in the bottom of the third, as
Cipolla doubled to right center, took third on a Doyon single, and
scored on an RBI-groundout by sophomore Tyler DiPrato (Suffield,
Conn.). That would be more than enough for Vogt, who threw six
shutout innings, scattering four hits and two walks while striking
out eight.
The Beavers would finally break through against senior reliever
Danny Martin (Cromwell, Conn.) in the top of the eighth, as
first-year Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.)
singled in sophomore Billy Besinger (Milton,
Mass.) to make it a 4-1 contest. The Beavers later loaded
the bases with one out, but junior Jeff Raymond (Amston, Conn.)
came on to induce an inning-ending double play to preserve the
three-run lead.
Vogt improved to 2-0 with the win, while junior Rob Delbuono
(Trumbull, Conn.) tossed a perfect ninth to notch his second save.
Perkins and Cipolla each recorded three hits in the victory for the
Owls, while Doyon added a pair of safeties.
Senior starter Pete Bizinkauskas (Duxbury,
Mass.) settled down after a shaky first to go four
innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking one and
striking out one for Babson. The loss dropped his record to 0-1.
Junior Zach Rubin (Arlington, Mass.) added three
scoreless innings of relief, and senior Chris Legrow (North
Andover, Mass.) came on to get three key outs in the
eighth, including the last two with the bases loaded. Junior
Brian Scanlon (Lawrenceville, N.J.) was the only
Beaver with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.
