BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior lefthander Reid Jackson (Burlington,
Mass.) fired a complete game gem to outduel Babson College senior
righty Matt Barton (Washingtonville, N.Y.) as the
Suffolk University Rams edged the host Beavers, 2-1, in a
non-conference baseball matchup at Babson's Govoni Field on a
chilly Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Suffolk improved to 8-3 on
the year, while the Beavers dipped to 9-4.
Both pitchers were outstanding in the contest, with Jackson
(2-1) allowing just one run on six hits, walking three, hitting a
batter, and striking out five in nine innings to earn the win.
Barton (2-1) went seven innings in the start for Babson, giving up
two runs on six hits, walking one and fanning five. The Beavers'
senior hurler also hit four batters in the loss.
Barton pitched his way out of trouble in each of the first three
innings, stranding a total of six runners, including four in
scoring position. Meanwhile, the Babson offense staked him to a 1-0
lead in the bottom of the second, as first-year Travis
Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) laced a double to left center
and scored on a single through the left side by classmate
Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.). The Beavers would
eventually load the bases after a single by freshman Billy
Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and a walk to rookie
Stephen Albano (Amherst, N.H.), but Jackson
recorded one of his five strikeouts to prevent further damage.
After coming up empty in their first three at-bats, the Rams
finally broke through against Barton in the top of the fourth. With
two on and one out, junior Rory Gentile (Gloucester, Mass.) laced
an RBI double to left, scoring sophomore Mark Addesa (Revere,
Mass.) with Suffolk's first run. Senior Paul Vittozzi (North
Reading, Mass.) then followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring
sophomore Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.) from third and giving the
Rams a 2-1 lead.
That would prove to be all Jackson would need, as he stranded
runners at the corners in the fourth before setting down 13 of the
final 16 men that he faced - surrendering just two walks and a hit
batsman over the final five innings. The veteran southpaw also
received some defensive help from shortstop Addesa, who snagged a
line-drive off the bat of sophomore Andrew Aizenstadt
(Norwell, Mass.) and doubled off the potential tying run
at second to end the fifth.
Jonasson and Miller were the only two players with multiple hits
in the game, as Jonasson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and
Miller went 2-for-3. Junior righthander Keane Steiding
(Falmouth, Mass.) added two perfect innings of relief for
Babson, striking out one.
