NEW LONDON, CONN. -- Babson College had solid pitching
performances from sophomore Andrew Aizenstadt in
the opener and senior captain Jeff Wojnar in the
nightcap as the Beavers swept Coast Guard 6-1 and 10-3 in a New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opening
doubleheader for both teams.
In the opener, Aizenstadt (2-0) went the distance as he pitched
seven innings and allowed six hits and one earned run while walking
two and striking out six.
Babson blew open a 2-0 game with three runs in the sixth with
freshman Stephen Albano and junior Peter
O'Toole delivering back-to-back RBI singles in the inning.
O'Toole, sophomore Billy Besinger and freshman
Travis Jonasson each had two hits for Babson in
the opener.
Senior Pete Schofield (2-1) suffered his first loss of the
season for Coast Guard in game one. He worked 5 1/3 innings and
allowed seven hits, five runs, just two earned, while walking four
and striking out two. Junior John Jeffares had two of the Bears six
hits in game one.
In the second game, Wojnar (1-0) allowed a run and two hits in
the first before he retired 20 of the next 21 batters he faced
before leaving after seven solid innings. Wojnar allowed just the
two first inning hits while not walking a batter and striking out
eight.
Besinger's two-run single highlighted a five-run sixth as the
Beavers (7-2, 2-0) took a 9-1 lead. O'Toole was 4-for-6 with a
double, a homer and two RBI's in game two while Besinger was
3-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored. O'Toole's first home
run of the season was solo shot in the fourth which gave Babson a
3-1 lead.
Sophomore Jesse Karr (0-2) worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed six
earned runs to take the loss. Freshman Chris Martin pitched 3 2/3
innings of five-hit relief allowing just one run for Coast Guard
(4-7, 0-2) which has dropped four straight.
