FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Babson College baseball team posted a
double-header sweep of Bethel University in Florida on Saturday, as
the Beavers followed up a 10-7 extra-inning win with a 7-2 victory
in the nightcap. Babson is now 3-0 on the year, while the Royals
fell to 2-5.
Sophomore Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) led
the Babson offense in the sweep, going 6-for-9 with two doubles,
three runs, and three RBIs. Junior Jake Bartlett (Weymouth,
Mass.) added four hits, including two doubles, to go with
two runs and four driven in, and junior Peter O'Toole
(Salem, Mass.) contributed three hits, four runs, and two
RBIs. First-year Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.) and
senior Bryan Evans (Bellaire, Texas) each added
three hits apiece, with Evans also driving in three.
Senior righty Matt Barton (Washingtonville,
N.Y.) pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the
win in game one, while junior Michael O'Brien (Shrewsbury,
Mass.) picked up the victory in game two with seven
outstanding innings of one-run ball.
Babson plated five runs in the top of the third inning in the
opener, highlighted by a trio of run-scoring doubles. After
sophomore Andrew Aizenstadt (Norwell, Mass.)
knocked in the first run with a single, Bartlett drove him in with
a double. Sophomore Jeff Browne (Vorhees, N.J.)
followed with a two-run double and later scored on a two-bagger by
Cleary.
The Beavers added another run in the fifth, as Clearly and
sophomore Sean Pucciarelli (Robbinsville, N.J.)
recorded back-to-back singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
first-year Mike Martinez (Miami, Fla.). O'Toole
then followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0 Babson.
After getting blanked for the first four innings, Bethel erupted
for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to move in front, 7-6.
Babson then tied the contest when O'Toole walked, stole second, and
scored on a basehit by Besinger in the seventh. Barton came on in
relief and kept the Royals off the board in the bottom of the
seventh, sending the contest into extra innings.
Barton tossed another scoreless frame in the bottom of the
eighth, pitching around a pair of two-out errors. Babson then broke
the tie with three runs in the top of the ninth, thanks to three
walks and a pair of hits. O'Toole walked to lead off the inning,
and Besinger followed with a single. Aizenstadt then walked to load
the bases and Evans drew the Beavers' third free pass of the inning
to force in the go-ahead run. Babson would add a couple more on a
huge two-run single by Bartlett, and Barton tossed his third
scoreless inning of relief to secure the 10-7 nine-inning win.
Game two featured a fantastic pitching peformance by O'Brien,
who held Bethel scoreless for the first six innings en route to a
complete-game victory. The junior southpaw went seven innings,
allowing five hits and two runs - one of which was unearned - while
walking one and striking out five. The victory was the first of his
collegiate career.
Babson opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, as O'Toole
drew a one-out walk, moved to third on an error, and scored on a
single by Besinger. The Beavers added two more in the fourth - one
on a sac fly by first-year Travis Jonasson (Needham,
Mass.) and the second on an RBI-hit by O'Toole, and then
tacked on another in the fifth when junior Brian Scanlon
(Lawrenceville, N.J.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a
Bartlett double.
Babson pushed its lead to 7-0 in the sixth, scoring three runs
on two hits and an error. Besinger doubled in Jonasson with the
first run of the inning, and Evans plated Besinger and O'Toole with
a double of his own. Bethel scratched out two runs in the seventh
to avoid the shutout, but it would not be enough to prevent the 7-2
Babson victory.
